1.
Ignoring everything else in this thread so far, I do have to laugh at the nonsense people come out with about us getting found out at the end of Lamberts tenure! We actually picked up more points in the second half of that season than the first and yes man for man we were very poor but Lambert got the best out of them and we had a much better team that year than we have now.

Lambert was no more disloyal than any other manager including Hughton, he was just more coveted, you can guarantee that if Villa came in for Hughton he''d also be off in a shot. Stop talking sh!t about one of the best managers we''ve ever had and one of the main reasons we''re not currently in the same mess Coventry are in!

We also weren''t gung ho either, there was no reason that style of play couldn''t have continued. We scored a lot of goals because we played to the teams strengths and conceded a lot of goals because of our poor defensive personnel.

Hughton is currently getting the team playing to less than the sum of their parts, for a club like ours to survive in this league we need to be playing at least to our potential. We''re far too rigid (to put it very, very mildly) the team has no confidence and hasn''t had any since the 10 game run was over last year and something needs to change. I desperately want it to work for Hughton but so far his tenure on the whole hasn''t been good enough. He''s never going to get plaudits for keeping us ''where we should be'' via absolutely dire football
I think looking at the stats previously that we lost 7 of the last 12 games of the season when Lambo was in charge, including those awful defeats to Blackburn a, Liverpool h and Man City h. My own view was that performances were dropping off.

Now, if Lambo is such a legend, tell me why, with the attacking talent they have, Aston Villa have the least number of home goals of any team in the PL, 6 from 9 home games and only 7 points from those games.

I think you''ll Aston Villa are saying exactly the same things that you are - that PL is not getting the best of his players, Benteke, Weimann being top of that underperforming list.

  2.
He should have been gone months ago , the club is sleepwalking into relegation for no other reason than sticking by a man who would struggle to manage a Sunday pub side . Palace ,Sunderland and Fulham have all changed and got far better managers than we have and you will be able to make that 4 when WBA appoint somebody .
absolute twaddle.

We''ve sleepwalked about 5 places up the table in the last 4 weeks. What is Poyet''s record since he took over, what is Meulensteen''s? I think Hughton''s will stack up quite well..

  3. A decent post IMHO.

The top 7 Clubs in this division are in their own league and without a benefactor we are unlikely to ever break that ''glass ceiling''. We are in our own league with the other 13 PL clubs and at least a dozen Championship Clubs - those have been our traditional rivals over the last 20 years. The likes of Leicester, Wolves, Forest, QPR, Ipswich, Birmingham, Charlton, Leeds, Palace, Derby, Blackburn, Cardiff and West Ham are all Clubs that we''ve played more regularly than most over that period and who might be considered comparable in size to ourselves. Perhaps Leeds and West Ham are the potentially largest Clubs in that bunch.

Interestingly, we are above every single one of those Clubs at present and that is a fine barometer to measure our relative success.

    Long may it continue.

  4. A sensible post from the OP. Unrealistic expectations cause massive problems for Clubs across the land.

I''ve seen in here people suggesting that we should expect to beat Sunderland away. Likewise I''ve had an argument with a guy earlier who was of the view that it was ''unacceptable'' that we had ''only'' drawn with Cardiff and Swansea.

IMHO people need to be less like consumers and more like supporters, understand that every point is hard earned at this level, and get behind their Club.

  5. To suggest you would rather play open and lose than get an important point is frankly embarrassing. A true supporter wants what is best for NCFC which is to get results rather than play heroically and lose.

In my experience people only say such things in sotuatikms like this. When the Texan does play well and lose, such as v Chelsea this season, it''s Hughton out.

    Get a grip

  6.
The gutless rationalization for Lambert leaving is sickening. He was denied his right to negotiate with other teams so he left. Utter blind nonsense he was leaving a sinking ship or had his secret of success found out or that he''s only a lower league talent.

In his time at AV, that team has improved from near relegation to midtable. At the same time, Norwich has gone from midtable to not quite midtable. We''ve also gone from fabulously entertaining to boring as watching grass grow and now somewhat entertaining.

Yah, Lambert is out of his depth and spinning his wheels going nowhere fast. Such blind ignorance must be blissful.

You know who COULD thrive under his guise should he part ways with Villa? Scotland!
''midtable to not quite midtable'' - hmm, didn''t we finish higher under CH last season than under PL the season before?

As LDC says, there is a lot of selective memory going on here. The difference between the managers is much smaller than people would care to believe. When CH was a championship manager with Newcastle, his side romped to 1st place with 100 goals, yet people still want to single him out as ''negative''.

Villa have scored fewer goals at home this season than we have - that must be a bit of a head spinner for all those that want to praise the messiah and deride CH.

  7. Yes, amazingly it does sometimes take time for players to learn their teammates, the system and the league that they are playing in.

One thing that Hughton has got right throughout his time at the Club is his transfer record - he''s made very few poor signings and alot of success stories.

You can guarantee that at some point Leroy Fer is going to move on for big money. There are others who have the potential to do so too. Hooper is looking a fantastic signing (despite the fact not so long ago on here suggesting that Hughton destroys striker''s careers). Add to that Bassong, Whittaker, Garrido, Olsson, Snodgrass, Redmond and I would say his record is pretty decent.

Granted the jury is still out on some, RVW, Elmander, the latter who for me has really improved in the last two games, but overall apart from Butterfield and Becchio (!) I can''t think of too many signings who have failed.

  8. This is a really interesting thread, because for all those who prefer him to Hughton, very few would actually have Lambert back.

For me, there''s no doubt that he fell out with McNally and possibly board members and the Chairman big time, but that was no reason for him to celebrate his wins at Carrow Road in the exaggerated manner that he did - that was disrespectful to the fans, particularly the 4-1 cup game where he was high fiving his entire bench before the end of the game and then marching across the pitch. There was no need for that.

A brilliant manager for the Club, without whom we may still be in League One, but never go back.

  9. I''ve said several times that despite the hysteria on here (which has strangely disappeared after we''ve picked up a couple of wins) CH was never really close to the boot.

You could quite visibly see the delight of McNally and the board when we beat West Ham, giving the thumbs up to CH etc. That certainly suggested to me that they are still right behind him. And so they should be. Let''s see just how much all these Clubs that have sacked their managers improve shall we.

Van Wink, I await your apology...

    You have it
Cheers Van Wink - I''m not a rumour monger I heard from the proverbial ''trusted source'' that this was on the cards or I wouldn''t have started the thread.

It does seem remarkable that AVB has been sacked on the basis of two poor results. They are just off the back of two consecutive away wins! Their league position really isn''t that bad.

I just hope that our board shows a bit more sense.

  11. I just can''t get my head around the reaction of some supporters. Redmond seems to be a hero who can do no wrong, despite having virtually no end product. Don''t get me wrong, the lad is 19 and so I don''t expect the end product but that is where the lad is at right now.

On the flipside, Elmander is some sort of villain, yet I thought he was impressive today, got an assist for the goal for the second game running and won alot of balls, he''s certainly providing good service to Hooper right now.

People really do just see what they want to see.

  12. with the greatest respect, I don''t understand why you can''t look at the facts before starting this thread.

We''ve conceded 29 goals in 16 PL games so far. However, we''ve conceded 16 of those goals in just 3 games v Arsenal, Citeh and Liverpool.

That means 13 goals conceded from the other 13 games, which shows that against our peers our record is reasonable. Indeed, we''ve kept 5 clean sheets already this season.

Our defensive record isn''t really that bad.

  13. Just thought it was worth pointing out that taking all of Lawro''s predictions this season and producing a league table would have us currently in 12th place on 18pts.

My feeling this season is that Lawro has been a little more generous in his predictions towards us - I believe he had us in the bottom 3 according to his predictions last season, but given that he is a ''neutral'' it is interesting that he has us just one point better off than we actually are. A good indication that we are doing ok.
