  1. Do we feel that Hugill will be given a go in the Premier League? I ask because if my memory serves me correctly we have to pay West Ham a further £2-2.5m now we’ve been promoted. Wondering whether the club will look to recoup some of that money and sell him or give him a chance. It’s been hard to judge him this season. He started to look a threat when he was getting the right service then he got injured. Seems a great lad to have around the place though and he celebrates from the bench like he’s just scored.

What we feeling, will he be here next season?

Fine but the likelihood is we will need to sell someone to cover a covid hole in the finances.

Need in what sense? To balance the books or for squad strengthening? We’ve already committed £14m on transfers so I can’t see that the club feels it’s  on a poor financial footing

  3. Honestly, who doesn’t learn from experience? Seems fairly obvious. Looking at this season alone, a lot of effort has been made to make us more solid in midfield to provide more protection to the defence. We’ve also looked better organised when defending set pieces.

What the club as a whole have hopefully learned is that you need options within the squad and the recruitment needs to be much better this time. We barely had 2 centre backs fit at the same time last season which meant Farke couldn’t change tactics to 5 at the back if he wanted to try and shore things up. We had no tactical flexibility. On top of that, we didn’t sign a single player that improved the team and lacked adequate backup for the first team for out of sorts regulars. Being realistic though, if I know this then Farke and Webber know it too. They are not dumb and as I’ve said they’ve already addressed defensive frailties. On top of that they’ve tried to fill the no 10 spot which was a problem last season. From what I’ve seen of Dowell recently, if not for injury he would have held down that position all season.

I don't think Aarons is going to be a Spurs player unless Mourinho gets the boot. I get the sense he doesn't want someone that short in his defence.

He’s taller than Ashley Cole who Mourinho signed as a full back. The bigger barrier I think is that Max is a good few years off being the wrong side of mid twenties for Jose. You are right though, Mourinho does like tall players.

I was never a fan of loans other than emergencies as I thought clubs should use the transfer system.

But how these systems are used have changed so I can now see their worthiness.

I do think it’s a shame though. While all clubs benefit to some degree, it is a system that greatly benefits the bigger clubs more. It’s not just money that creates imbalance in the Premier League, it’s the top clubs stockpiling young talent as well. That makes it harder for clubs to establish themselves in the top league. Spurs would no longer sell us Crook, Bowen, Culverhouse and Polsten. We would loan them and then they’d go back to Spurs or the sale price would increase beyond what we could pay. Those players were a huge part of the best team in my lifetime.

Don’t disagree with any of this, Sean. But as VAR stands right now I don’t like that. And the offside thing really is complete b0ll0ck5. It should be very simple. The attacking player must be fully clear of the defending player, not just his left testicle.

Yeah, I like what VAR should be not how it is currently being implemented. The “offside” West Brom goal was a joke.

Agreed, it really is beyond tedious. Would love it if clubs all downed tools until it was either removed from the game, or improved greatly

I like VAR, I don’t like how it’s being used. Technology is this day and age is needed but they need to use it better. You can’t have situations like Lampards ghost goal vs Germany where the non goal is being replayed on the big screen in the stadium and everyone can see it was over the line. You don’t want to see big matches decided by a penalty given dive. They are just implementing VAR wrong. For a start, if you can’t decide if someone is offside within 2 minutes of looking at it then it’s not clear and obvious. There is no need to forensically check for 5 minutes if a players left but strayed offside by 0.05mm. There also isn’t enough of the ref going to look at the screen. It worked fine during the World Cup with the Refs reviewing their own decisions. I think the actual match referee deserves the chance to make the big calls in the match, including having the opportunity to revisit their own calls.

I have been hoping Spurs win every game with outstanding performances by their holding midfielders.

Unfortunately they are woeful so I have resigned myself to seeing us trying to persuade a player such as Gilmour to come on loan.

Don’t give up on getting Skipp back if Mourinho is still at Spurs next season.  Despite his protestations, he is awful when it comes to blooding young players himself. He’ll use already established young players but he is somewhat risk averse to giving them their start himself. If Skipp was 28 we would never see him again but I’m hopeful we can get him back.

Maupay has done pretty well, Watkins has stepped up excellently, Bowen is a key player at West Ham, Brighton's sold defence is based on players from the Championship (Dunk, Burn, Webster) there are plenty of examples if you look.

Edit- will add 11th placed Villa have a core of players picked up from the lower leagues- Konsa, McConnell, Cash, Watkins all regular starters.

I didn’t say there weren’t players that can’t step up and of course there are plenty of examples of those that have but there are plenty of high priced flops as well. My question was more who we could buy to improve the team at a price we would/could pay. How much is someone like Toney worth for example? Out of our price range I would bet. I also wasn’t saying Maupay has been a failure, the point is that he hasn’t done any better than Pukki and cost £20 million. We won’t be spending £20 million on top Championship players.

  10. The honest question is really, how many Championship really make the step up to the PL and who would improve our squad at a price we would pay?  Maupay cost £20m and his scoring record last season was 1 less than Pukki.  McBurnie cost £17.5m and after 59 games still has 4 less PL goals than Pukki.  Players like Maddison and Watkins have done well but I can't see us spending that kind of money.

Don’t doubt for a minute that Godfrey wouldn’t have benefited from a (fit) CB partner last season, but I’m purely looking at him as an individual player and what he was doing. One destined for the very top I feel, I’ve always thought Ben Godfrey has ridiculous potential, but last year he himself in particular lacked cohesion and telepathy with Tim Krul - I don’t know how many times I watched those nervous exchanges at the back between my hands, but it was more games than not. He made some great last ditch blocks to counter that, mind, and so it wasn’t a total disaster. But he is a much improved player this season, and I would still maintain last season was a season too soon for him.

I get what you are saying but the improvements he’s made this season are in large part down to lessons he learnt last year. He certainly had some less than stellar moments last season and he got caught out at times but the whole season was a baptism of fire for him somewhat. Fair play to the lad for growing from it

Wow, a lot of people misread what I was saying!

Yes, I am aware of our points total and no, I'm not wetting my pants about playing either team.

All I was saying is that these next two games will be a good chance to get an idea how we will fare next season, as opposed to lower league Championship teams.

It was a fair point you were making. Especially considering it was losing home and away to so many relegation rivals last time that did for us. On top of that, we were comfortably beaten by those rivals on too many occasions. If we are to stay up we will need to be picking up more points in those games so I get what you’re saying.

Godfrey was fine, just needed a proper defender next to him. Will do him good long term though as shown with how well he's done at Everton

Would agree. Godfrey would have benefitted from a seasoned centre back for guidance last season. Too often he was almost the “senior” defender the amount of times he was paired with a midfielder. People forget that he went into PL with half a seasons experience in defence. Before then his senior experience had been in midfield.

  14. You can go down playing any style of football. The difference being that fans are little more accepting when teams at least try to play football. Mourinho is a prime example of this. Every club he has been at, fans have been OK while his style was bringing in trophies, the second that stops though they want him gone. Spurs fans were happy to swallow it down earlier in the season when they looked title contenders not so much since.

Bruce is also being far too simplistic as to why we were relegated.

  15. People seem to feel that a stinking rich owner solves everything but there are richer owners than ours in the Championship and lower that are going nowhere. If it was just as simple as owner worth then we’d be in league 1 at best. Things are never as simple as just throwing money at it and I say that as someone who felt that last time in the Prem recruitment was awful and the funds available handcuffed Farke massively

  16. He’s started well. I think it says a lot that Farke played him ahead of Tettey or Sorensen, it shows he has faith in him. He’s done everything asked of him. Apart from one moment last night when an opponent got past him far too easy he snuffed out a few promising Huddersfield attacks because he read the situation well. Last ditch defending is important but to see a young player read the game so well and stop attacks before they really got going was impressive

I think too often we only think about ourselves as fan pundits. In the games you've pointed out, both Barnsley and Bristol City played aggressive, high pressing styles and that allowed us to use the more direct ball in behind as a weapon. Most other sides this season haven't allowed it. McLean's ball v Birmingham at home wouldn't have resulted in a goal against Karanka's low block.

It's a trade off for opposing managers. Barnsley did cause us problems as we attempted to play out from the back. Yet, when we overcame their press there was huge space in behind and we had 4 or 5 very good chances to score resulting from that.

As such, when some on this thread say that opponents have 'worked us out', that may be an exaggeration of the position. Rather, sides like Brum and Sheff Wed decided on the best way to attempt to nullify us. They had a degree of success with their low block frustrating us. They also both lost. Millwall and QPR did sneak a point. Preston attacked us far more but ultimately took a point also.

The reality, for me, is we have the best playing style in the league in terms of the quality of our passing and movement. So nearly every side is working out how to nullify us and keep the game tight. We are a big fish in this Championship pond.

I think the truth is that most teams in this league are happy to take a point against us by sitting deep while hoping maybe they could nick all 3 on the counter.  I don't think there are many teams willing to get into a football match with us.

We'd have to make repayments on a huge loan with much reduced revenue. That's why we can't afford to do it, the collateral is irrelevant.

That's the issue for me here.  If you take a loan now for ground improvements, which I accept would be good, you risk falling back into a situation where you have to sell players and maybe not getting the best possible price for them if we don't go up. We have no idea when a situation may occur that allows City to have a decent matchday income.  Tying yourself into a loan to increase capacity could result in us handcuffing ourselves further in transfer recruitment should we go up.

Really good post. Worth noting 2 years ago, for a large part of the season teams felt like they could come and have a go at us. We rarely had the ridiculously deep sitting back happy with 30% possession teams that we've had this season. It's a completely different game when the opposition sets up like that.

I think that's the difference.  Teams are not going to leave space in behind for Pukki to run into or allow players the time to find him.  Bristol City gave us space, we scored 3 and should have had more.  Even Watford, with many players with multiple PL seasons under their belt sat back, trying to hit us on the counter.  It's the reality of how most of this season is going to be.  2 seasons ago we were a surprise, even to us.  This season, teams know all about us.

While I agree with a lot of the OP, a big issue for us this season is not converting enough goal scoring opportunities. We’re top of most of the stats but poor on that one, & if we converted better we’d have a lot more comfortable wins.

Would agree, it's not that what we are doing isn't effective, it's that we are missing far too many chances.  The stats tell us this plus my own (admittedly bad) eyesight. QPR should have been buried before they equalised and then we were somewhat fortunate to get a point with their late chance.  Similar against Barnsley, opportunities not capitalised upon and it nearly bit us in the bottom when conceding another late chance.  Start putting away those chances and we will make some games a bit more comfortable.

  21. I really can't see any first team players coming in during January, unless we lose Buendia, Cantwell, Pukki or Aarons.  With the squad now approaching full fitness, you would have to question what kind of money it would take to improve the first 11 when everyone is fit.

On the topic of Hugill, we are never going to see the best of him I don't think unless you play him with Platcheta and Argos together.  Hugill's game just doesn't suit Buendia, Cantwell, Stiepermann, Dowell and Vrancic.  They are fantastic players but whipping in early balls just isn't their strength.
