  1. I think it''s important to get the right type of striker too. We''ve been linked with a few, but we really need to focus on a target man. I still have faith in Cureton and I think if he starts the season well and has good support he could easily better his performance at Colchester. And we all know how effective Martin can be if he gets his act together. But both of these need someone with height and strength to play off. Would Andy Cole have helped in that respect? I doubt it very much. Or Martin Paterson come to that? I know target men are rare and good ones cost (see the inflated price of Kyle Lafferty as an example) but that''s where the bulk of the summer "warchest" has to go. We need someone good, young, and built like a brick outhouse who can get up higher than Pete Doherty on the last day of Glastonbury.

Firstly, I would like to point out that I rate both players as competant Championship centre halfs. Neither as capable of playing in the Premiership and both too good to play in League One. They are average.

Of the two I feel that Doherty was over rated when we signed him, and that Shackell has not fulfilled his potential. Thats said, as individuals they are both good players.

I am however most desperate for this partnership to be broken up, it is a partnership that had not worked in the 3 or 4 years it has been in operation. Therefore a centre back comes above even a striker for the most important signing of the summer.

Quite simply, The Shackell/Doherty partnership has never been as effective as the Mackay/Fleming partnership.  I think that both of these players are capable of staking a claim for a first team spot  JUST NOT TOGETHER they dont work well as a team, and depending on who this new centre back would be.

If this was Martin Taylor, which it wont be, I can personally see Shackell thriving alongside him and go somewhere towards reaching the potential that he had.

It just fills me with dread, even a little anger, to think that we might go into the new season without acknowledging that this partnership is not effective enough to win promotion and will never achieve what it has failed to achieve.

I would even have Alex Pearce back if necessary.

Great post. Intelligent and reasoned without hyperbole. Two nice blokes who always give their best. Neither are Bobby Moore, but equally, neither are Titus Bramble!

Personally I''d prefer a fresh start with two new centre halves, but as long as we get at least one quality one we may be able to get by. We need a permanent signing at Centre Half though. Before Doc (who originally came as a striker) the previous centre half to sign permanently was Malky and that was way back under Bruce Rioch for gods sake!!!

  3. Cheers. Don''t know too much about Bailey either, but appears he''s a midfielder anyway and that Bertrand''s the attacking defender. Damned sources! Never trust a bloke earwigging in a restaurant!

Absolutely correct EM. After the Etherington debacle I should keep quiet!!!

  4. Hello all. I''m back in my third incarnation since the days of Canary 02 and Canary O''Tutu. Nice to see that Smudger and Cluck have disappeared!

Good to see Evil Monkey and Coelho still putting the world to rights too!

Anyone else thinking of turning up at Colney with their boots just so the "squad" can have a 5-a-side in training?!!!

Mainly just posting because I''ve heard a whisper that the attacking defender is apparantly Nicky Bailey of Southend. Don''t shoot me if it''s wrong though as my "source" knows nothing about football but overheard a conversation between two men with Norwich City ties on. Sounds bogus I know, but as the club give us nothing to go on, may as well exaggerate what we can!!!
