  1. I''m not sure they''ll sign somebody before Tuesday but I do think they need somebody brought as cover up front. If Hucks goes down injured who do they have who can replace him?

That said, can somebody please, please, please explain to me why we need to buy a target man?

Do Arsenal play with a target man? Do they hell, you can count the number of goals Henry scores with his head in a season on one hand!!!

It does require a change in the fundamental style of play but hey this is the Premiership. Look at the teams that are really successful and you''ll find they play with pace and movement and the ball on the deck. Stick a target man in the mix and you immediately offer the back four an option of the big hoof.

  2. Some stats on those other guys:

    Harewood.

    Apps Goals
    League 161 (58) 65
    FA Cup 7 (2) 2
    League C 13 (4) 5
    Other 5 (0) 0

    Johansson.

    Apps Goals
    League 137 (72) 52
    FA Cup 5 (5) 5
    League C 10 (1) 4
    Other 9 (8) 6

    Earnshaw.

    Apps Goals
    League 144 (37) 87
    FA Cup 12 (2) 9
    League C 6 (2) 10
    Other 5 (1) 1

    Scowcroft.

    Apps Goals
    League 264 (44) 67
    FA Cup 13 (1) 2
    League C 26 (5) 8
    Other 7 (4) 1

Looking at that you''d have to pick Earnshaw if you were looking for a goalscorer.

  3. Some physical info on current strikers and potential targets.

    "Neon" Leon McKenzie, height: 5''10"
    Darren Huckerby, height: 5''10"
    Mattias Svensson, height: 6''0"
    Zema Abbey, height: 6''1"
    Gary Doherty, height: 6''1"

Robert Earnshaw, height: 5''8" [as tall as me ;-)]
    Marlon Harewood, height: 6''1"
    Jonton Johansson(sp?), height: 6''1"

I actually think Earnshaw would be a good signing but it would require a change in the way City play which I don''t think Worthy will do. Keep the ball on the deck and zip it in behind the full backs or centre halves and players like McKenzie, Huckerby and Earnshaw would thrive on that sort of service. However, City seem to want to play the way that requires a big man up front and have a player working off of him. That excludes Earnshaw immediately because of his height and make Harewood and Johansson much more likely targets.

Personally I''d rather see them keep the ball on the deck and destroy teams with attackers that have pace.

Top strikers in the league, yeah there are others but.....

    Thierry Henry, height: 6''1"
    Ruud van Nistelrooy, height: 6''2"
    Alan Shearer, height: 6''0"
    Wayne Rooney, height: 5''10"
    Didier Drogba, height: 6''2"

  4. GazzaTC, you may right. Perhaps Holt needs to be rested. Besides the whole point about having a reasonable sized squad in the Premiership is to be able to deal with injuries and so on. Perhaps Worthy is beginning to realise that you can also use the squad to good effect by implementing some semblance of a rotation scheme.

If you bring in Safri, at what point do you give Mullers a look?

  5. I''ve read recent posts about both the United and Newcastle games, and listened to the live commentary from CanariesWorld last night, and wanted to know people''s thoughts on this change.

Holt has been singled out as a slight flaw in the midfield make up at the moment because of his inability to retain possession. Safri, quite clearly, has been already touted by many here as the immediate replacement. That said, what about Helveg in a central midfield holding role?

Does Helveg have the legs for such a role? Does he have the ball retention needed? Comments have already suggested he has the distribution ability that Holt sometimes lacks.

What do the rest of you folks think?

  6. Tumbleweed, I have to say I wondered how long it would be before somebody raised the point about the last defender City had that became one of our most prolific strikers. Is Gary Doherty another Chris Sutton? Only time will tell, although I would suspect he would rather be playing in his more familiar central defensive role.

  7. Peter R, do you know if the domain name redirection and the like is working ok?

I''m seeing similar problems to "Susie b" in that attempts to access www.pinkun.co.uk seems to fall on "deaf ears" for indeterminate amounts of time. I would guess that is probably the same problem as access to the forums but thought I''d mention it just in case.

A question for the IS folks, I assume the load balancer is something more sophisticated than a simple round robin algorithm, but can it be set to a simple round robin algorithm?

  8. While I''d agree that McKenzie''s hunger for success deserves a start I don''t think it works with what Worthy appears to want to play. He seems to have a believe that you can only play football with a target man up front!! Somebody correct my interpretation here if I''m wrong.

It''s a question of how long it will take for him to realise that in the Premiership you can destroy teams by keeping the ball on the deck and attacking with pace.

Why not stick four speedsters up front and let them rotate?

    So,

    Green

Helveg, Fleming, Charlton, Drury ----- "Chorlton and his wheelies ;-)"

    Francis, Holt

    McVeigh, Huckerby, McKenzie, Bentley

And from those front four rotate two into the wide positions as play dictates.

  9. Ok, tell me what formations did Worthy play last season? Was it strictly 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 all the time or did he try something else?

I can''t see Worthy going for a formation that is anything other than "vanilla" which is a shame because Zip''s 4-2-3-1 formation sounds like the right thing to try.

  10. Zip, do you really thing Worthy will abandon the idea of having a target man up front?

I agree with your suggested team selection but as many who have posted in the forum have already said, it requires City to keep the ball on the deck and play it to feet. You''ve probably seen them more than me so the question remains are they capable of doing that - keeping it on the deck.

I think in the Premiership they are going to have to find a way to keep the ball on the deck. If they want to model their style of play on anybody then they should look at Arsenal. How many times do you see them knock the ball to Henry in the air?

  11. I know this is probably not the place to post this note of praise but what the hell it is connected with the "Calling all you lasses...." thread line.

Wanted to pass on my praise for "City Babes" writing in the Birds Eye View column. I''ve just read the Three Pigs of Premierville article and it''s a good job I''m in my home office on my own or my family would wonder what the hell I was laughing at.

    "City Babe" you''re a wee gem ;-)

  12. In response to "Turn To...."

What does Wiltord give us that we don''t already have in the form of McKenzie. Yeah, I know several years of Premiership experience which counts for something. But he strikes me as the same sort of player as McKenzie and the thing you would have to say is that so far Leon hasn''t been given the starting chance.

Svensson gives us an aerial threat but he lacks pace. If City keep the ball on the deck, which they should do, why shouldn''t they play with slighter players up front.

    Why not play:

    Green
    Edworth, Charlton, Fleming, Drury
    Holt/Helveg, Francis
    Jonson, Bentley, Huckerby
    McKenzie

and give the three players behind the front man license to roam. I don''t think either Bentley or Huckerby really likes being asked to play in a specific positional role, whereas their biggest threat appears to be from them popping all over the opposition backline.

  13. kdncfc you seemed to hit on the head the one thing the limited highlights of matches showed to me on Match of the Day. Have City only got Huckerby to turn a game on it''s head or are there others there that just need time to adapt? Jonsson, Bentley?

When you look at the other sides that I mentioned in my earlier post they seem to have more than one player who can turn a game (don''t ask me to reel off a list of names).

The one thing that will count against Svensson is his lack of pace. Pull out the names of a bunch of top strikers in the Premier League and you find a bunch of players with bags of pace.
Henry, Reyes, Rooney, Cisse, Drogba, Van Nistlerooy, Bellamy, Defoe, Vassell, Anelka(?), Pedersen(?).

So if you play Svensson you need to put on players in and around him that provide that threat. Maybe Jonsson, Huckerby, Bentley, McVeigh and McKenzie can provide that in some combination.

  14. Actually now has got to be the time to play against Man U with all those key players out. That said it ain''t going to be easy.

I want to ask something of 1st Wiz to see how positive he felt about the performance against Palace. First off let me make it clear I wasn''t there, I''m a remote fan who gets down to Carrow Road once in a while, so I''m stuck with what little the TV shows us and that wasn''t much.

Was there negatives in the game that the gaffer and the boys have to sort out Wiz?

Having watched Match of the Day you can see a number of other teams that you would expect City to do well against - West Brom, Bolton(?), Man City, Spurs, Everton, Charlton(?). But even those teams have numbers of players that can turn a game, but do City?

  15. AussieMatt - I''m sure if you phone Evening News they''ll send you one. They might charge you something for the postage but hey you''ll get it.

Alternatively, perhaps you can bend Web Team: Peter''s ear and get him to send you one.

Just ordered mine, but then again I''m only up here in Scotland ;-)

  16. Sorry to the rest of you to awaken old threads but did anyone notice in the off-season transfer dealings one of the players in this note making a move.

Rob Edwards from Aston Villa to Wolverhampton £150,000

A bargain under-21 international that would have provided cover at right-back as well as centre-half.

Seems kind of odd that City didn''t show interest in this guy, but if Briggs'' exit is anything to go by that might explain why.
