Gary O'Neil's comments......

Recommended Posts

basically criticising some player''s commitment to chase back 80 yards to stop the second goal.

found a piece of footage showing how OUR corner lead to their winning goal.....there will be arguments over how many ,if any of our defenders should have gone up for it in the first place.....but looking a this footage, who is O''Neil pointing fingers at ?

He''s talking about decision making more than commitment. Watch the clip again and follow Martin Olsson''s contribution. Gets sucked inside, vacates his area and allows Antonio acres to pick his spot.

The guy is not a defender, avoids any form of physical contact with an opponent and seems completely devoid of any heart.

I can fully understand his comment if the footage is looked at.

One or two players seem to be jogging back whereas Cuellar almost cleared the ball off the line after running from the opposition six yard box!

How many of his own players did he have to run past to get there?

I didn''t realise how close Cuellar got to clearing that. Olsson is certainly off form this season and his defending there left an awful lot to be desired. He has his man covered and then just ran towards the ball leaving Antonio completely unmarked.

Maybe time to give Garrido a go again. he did quite well at the start of the season. In fact did we win every game whilst Olsson was out and he played left back?

The first goal is worse. Ruddy takes a goal kick, Lafferty heads it up into the air, it''s going out for a throw well in the Forest half but Lafferty swings a boot at it & hooks it straight to a Forest player. He hoofs it upfield, Turner has the chance to head it out for a corner but nods it straight to another Forest player. Turner then doesn''t close him down, Olsson makes no more than a half hearted effort to get into a defensive position but basically does nothing. Marking in the box is non existent and the rest is history.

Its interesting isn''t it that a lot was made during Hughton''s time of the fact our manager and coaching staff were all defenders and that perhaps having a coach who was a forward might help. Now we seem to have gone to the other extreme where we don''t have any ex defenders on our coaching staff and the displays on the pitch certainly do not suggest that defending, holding shape and man marking are something we spend a lot of time working on on the training pitch! I know that we have not conceded that many goals but thats because we are generally on top in most games and in some ways therefore concentration and keeping your shape become even more important. The goals we are conceding tend to suggest that is a weakness because they nearly all result from us losing the ball up the pitch and having defenders out of position.

And one of those players that Cuellar did run past was O''Neil, who had at least a 20 yards start on Cuellar.

Pot callaing kettle black?

Comments re Olsson are all valid. He is utter crap this season, and Garrido must be given a chance to stake his claim now.

Cuellar was decent enough.

Turner at fault for the first goal, Olsson for the second.

Ruddy seems too much in his comfort zone, and rarely makes vital stops these days. Almost everything thrown at him goes in, it seems, and it is not as if it is unstoppable shots.

Usually quite long range shots, or rather close to his body.

Cant argue with any of that.

I''ve thought all season Ruddy has been a bit of a liability.  Let in some really soft goals this season and apart from Brentford away cant think he has had to much to do.  Cost us more points than he has won us.  If Joa Hart can get dropped then Ruddy certainly can!

Agree on Olsson to, while Garido isnt quick his defending seems better.  For all Olsson''s pace his positioning at time is awefull.

Turner is always prone to the odd mistake but overall I think he''s solid enough.  Keep Russ at full back and think things will improve.

Now Robson has got the boot I assume its to make way for a defensive coach so sort this mess out before its too late
