It's the midfield

Recommended Posts

For all the talk of our defence or forwards it is the midfield where games are won and lost. Our midfield has no balance (a LM would be useful!), no creativity and no movement. The Brighton keeper can pick out passes better than Tettey and Johnson.  If we have Tette, Johnson AND Howson in the centre of the park then why in God''s name is there never a midfielder in the box when we cross a ball in!?  All 3 jog up to about 35yards out and stand there!Despite all this talk of "the best squad in the league", lets be honest, how many of our CM would get in any other sides?  Howson ticks along never really doing much but being today enough to not warrant criticism.  Johnson, well we all know his limitations already.  Tettey, if we just let him sit in front of the back 4 then fair enough.....but if he is sitting then the rest of the midfield need to be making runs into the box.

Haha a lovely bit of poetic justice there.  We get midfielders in the box and we score.Hopefully that will spur on Howson to perform as we know he can.  He can run at top prem defences and score, yet fails to boss Championship midfields.  Is it a confidence thing or is it coached out of him?

what you say is not invalidated by howsons good goal, but more magnifies it - what the midfield COULD be.

Tettey is steady, bj too pedestrian and howson too sproadic

what stick out today is the tiresome side to side passing, safe secure slow and soparific - turn the pitch 90 degrees and we will at least attack!

Totally agree.

Pedestrian approach is mainly due to the slow nature of Johnson and Tettey. Both are poor passers, and need a few extra touches, which slows down the general play.

We need sharper midfield personell in January. MOre running power, more box-to-box.

The sideways 5 yard balls is a clear sign of lack of confidence.  Nobody wants to take responsibility and drive us up the pitch.  Lost count of the number of times Jerome was screaming for a ball down the channel in the first half only for the midfielder to put his foot on the ball, turn backwards, offload the ball and stand still. On the plus side Hooper took his chance very well: either of the other two would have skied it in to row z.  If Chris Martin can bang them in in this league then Hooper should be a 25goal a season man!!

Essentially, the responsibility for our wasted parachute payments and all that follows from that rests, firstly, with the board who appointed Adams and, secondly, with Adams.

Once again a manager has come in and said we''ll play passing, attacking football but failed to deliver. Even with the new football board there''s no plan anywhere at the club about how we should be playing and we get the same old managers producing the same old bog standard football. If we fail to rely on technique and pass the ball correctly then we''ll go absolutely nowhere in all areas of the pitch, especially midfield.

Clearly the idea of playing Tettey and Johnson in the same midfield is to make you solid, hard to break down. Yet we let in three goals at home.

Johnson was pretty much a passenger in the first half and I couldn''t help but think we might have been better served with a natural wide player out left, rather than accommodating him in an unbalanced midfield.
