Do we need three keepers ?

Recommended Posts

Briefly, I would say noWill Bunn sit it out for another season ?Will Rudd be third string with virtually no games, or go out on loan again ?Would it be better to sell Bunn and bring in a stop gap (Nash) and have Rudd on a 24 hr recall ?

I don''t know, City 1st. If only there was another forum where this. could be discussed in a non-confrontational way by people who all agree with each other. Oh ya, there is one! And it''s about as useful as a 3rd keeper.

I don''t think we do. And I don''t think Rudd will gain anything from sitting on the bench. Another loan may be the answer. As far as I remember we don''t have to be so afraid of losing 2 keepers (susp/injury) in this league because of the loan possibility and we don''t have to be tied down with a named 25 man squad.

that is much my thoughts nuttythe more flexible nature of being outside of the PL means players can move about far easier so it cannot malke sense for either Bunn or Rudd to speend the season bench warmingBunn will only see his career stalled and Rudd will see further developedment hindered if it''s him sat on the benchI should imagine that once the loan (transfer) window opens up we shall see some movement outwards, with outfield players also being sent off to far flung places to learn their tradeExpanding away from just keepers, it is re-assuring to see the club bringing in players like Thompson and McCandle, and the young Luton keeper (last seasin)This suggests that then club has target of how many young players they want coming through and if those already here are not necessarily ''up to it''. then players will be found elsewhere. Which also confirms why Adams was the boards choice. He has bought into this and has been involved in this for a considerable while.looking good.

seeing as Carlo Nash will shortly be in prison I don''t think we should get him back, but maybe someone like him on low wages or call on our youth team GK perhaps as our 3rd choice?

I think any first team squad ideally needs three goalkeepers. It''s stating the blindingly obvious, but goalkeeper is the most unique and specialised position in football. In most other positions you can play a player out of position and they while they may look unconvincing you can generally muddle through for a couple of games.

With a keeper you really don''t have that luxury. So you are always potentially one injury or suspension away form being alarmingly short of cover if you do not have three keepers.

In an ideal world you would send Declan Rudd out on loan and insert a very short notice recall clause into his contact. However, is that attractive to a potential suitor if they know they could be without a keeper given 24 hours notice?

Rudd recently signed a new contract. He therefore must be relatively confident about his prospects of breaking through at Norwich in the nearish future otherwise I would have thought he might have opted to try his luck elsewhere.

Sit out and play the occasional u21 game ?Any 24 recall would be acceptable as the loanee club would be able to fall back onto their stand by keeper and use the loan market for cover.

I don''t think Rudd would consider going on loan again. If we were to tell him we wanted to loan him out again I feel sure he would want a transfer rather than a loan, feeling that he was not needed with us. Nunn will probably be off when fully fit. He is a competent keeper, but that is all. Glad NA has made Rudd number two.

and you think Rudd would rather be sat on the bench all season than playing ?if he was not needed then he would be sold rather than retained (as the new contract demonstates)any loan would be to develop his skills, whereas sat on the bench would be a definite stagnationI know which one I would want

Currently we have four - Ruddy, Rudd, Bunn and Mathews.

I think that we need three only - to cover for injury or even suspension. In the extreme, I seem to remember that there are emergency rules about goalkeepers, which allow loans at any time.

If this is the case, I think that Bunn is surplus to requirements. I have never been sure about him - a good shot stopper, but too slight to deal with high balls and big attackers.

Like most on here I don''t see the need for the third keeper - Bunn needs to move on when he''s back to fitness.

Rudd went out last year and, by all accounts, seems to have benefited from his loan. This suits the club as we now have a decent standard young keeper as back up but how exactly Rudd views that only he will know. Considering he has just signed a new contract I guess he is satisfied for now.

One way round that is to play Rudd in the non Championship games which considering the length of our usual cup runs doesn''t amount to much.

Bayern Munic once got through 3 keepers in a game.. 1999.. Bayern Defender Sammi Kouffour collides with Oliver Kahn and knocks him out! 2nd choice keeper Hans Butt lasted 7 minutes before tearing his knee ligaments making a save... the left back went in goal played nearly 40 minutes, and makes a world class save at the end to secure a 2-1 win.. its on youtube... have a watch!

Bunn would have been sold by now had he not got injured. I agree he''s too good to be having him sat around. Rudd will get the cup matches and we need him there if Ruddy gets injured (happened 2 years ago). He is our definite number 2 keeper now and he should be given chances to push Ruddy. I''d imagine we''re being careful as to not letting him go anywhere as Ruddy will no doubt leave if we fail to get promoted this season and Rudd will be number 1. Other keepers should be loaned out and if we get an injury, we can loan someone in at any time.

I think we should have a clear first choice (Ruddy), an established 2nd choice (Bunn), and then a young lad from the academy as 3rd choice (Matthews). I personally would loan Rudd out when Bunn gets back from injury.
