Cardiff's Second Goal...Defensive tactics

Recommended Posts

Very interesting to see what our defence was doing for this goal, because it''s very clear what they were trying to do, and shows they are well enough drilled. Just a shame it didn''t work very well!

Olsson is well out of position up the field, presumably having been involved in an attack down the left. As a result, Hoiveld has shifted across to take Olsson''s place, and BJ has fallen back to fill Hoiveld''s space. Unfortuntely, Jones plays around Hoiveld like he''s not there, feeding Pilkington who crosses. His cross could be cut out by BJ but he doesn''t manage to and Gunnarson gets in just ahead of Turner to nudge it in the corner. So there are three defenders to get around before Cardiff can score but they still manage it.

It makes sense as a means to try and cover ourselves defensively following an attack involving the full backs - just a shame that it didn''t work! Although in hindsight, if Hoiveld had stayed in the middle with Turner and Johnson had gone out to meet Jones maybe the cross wouldn''t have found its way to Gunnarson. But then Pilkington would have had more time to shoot himself - who''d be a coach eh!

That''s standard coaching manual stuff that you''ll see from Liverpool and Everton week in week out, but you''re right, some managers are a lot more rigid and won''t take that approach

It was a similar scenario to the Bournemouth equalizer, when Redmond didn''t fully track the wide man, who got the cross in.

It happens, with the football we seem to want to play. That side of things will sharpen up as the season progresses, I''m sure.
