Minute silence for Hannah?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

The terrible murder of Hannah Witheridge has moved us all. It has been hard for me as she was my colleague and such a wonderful person to have known, worked with and socialised with.

As this tradegy has been such a worldwide news story and has touched many people should we as the people of Norwich, Norfolk be showing our respect Saturday with a minutes silence?

If you do one thing tonight - please say a prayer for her.

Thanks all in advance.

This is terrible for you and for anyone else associated with this young woman with everything ahead of her.

I don''t think a minutes silence at the ground is appropriate but black armbands on the players might suffice - especially if she had an affinity for Norwich City.

There was also Johanna Young back in ''92 from Watton and many other senseless deaths before and after.I don''t think prayer does anything whatsoever but would have no issue if the club did anything which would alleviate, just slightly, the terrible pain that family and those that knew either of them would be going through.Uttely senseless deaths of people who had their adult life ahead of them.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but this is not the kind of thing stadiums filled with fans for a match need to be sidetracked with. If so, it should happen for children dying from leukemia, families left in need when the breadwinner dies in a car crash, and other equally tragic but less sensational occurrences.

You know, sometimes it really isn''t the best of ideas to just type things that are in your head.

ICPS is perfectly entitled to his opinion.

Everybody will find the death of this young girl tragic, but it''s not for football to hold themselves responsible for marking the tragedy.

Do tennis fans show a minute''s silence before a key game?

Do horse racing aficionados stop for a minute before a big race?

The appropriate place would seem to be at weekend church services, but then Hannah might not have been religious.

If Hannah was connected with NCFC then it might be a different argument, but it wasn''t that long ago that these minute silences and black armbands were for only those connected closely with football.

Anybody, at any time, can hold there own minute''s silence for Hannah and her family, I''m not sure either why it has to enter the football arena en masse.

Personally I agree with Pineapple. Whilst nobody would dispute that this is an awful event and an appalling waste of life; unless she has a connection with the club a minutes silence is not appropriate. I am suspicious at the motives of complete strangers who feel the need to involve themselves in this sort of tragedy. It smacks of a somewhat ghoulish self-indulgence. Adopting this logic would dictate that there is a minutes silence for every son and daughter of Norfolk who suffers an untimely demise. I have no doubt that there are many such occurrences.

Let her friends and family grieve the loss of this poor girl privately.

Think the point Morty is trying to make, and please correct me if I am wrong , is one that maybe in some circumstances, its best just to leave an opinion on such an emotive subject rather than voicing it....

Sometimes, saying nothing is better, although I doubt people on this forum would understand the need for tact and diplomacy......

Just because you can doesn''t always mean you should.

[/quote]Sometimes that is true, but in this case not. I repeat, the OP asked for people to say what they thought. He wanted opinions, and I assume he realised some posters would be against any kind of commemoration at Carrow Road, and would say so.

Terrible murder. And since the young lady was from Yarmouth it would be entirely appropriate to have a minute''s silence before the game.

Agreed - but it has hit the national headlines so therefore becuase of that a minutes silence is appropriate.
