Happy Days!

Recommended Posts

A breath of fresh air seems to be blowing through Carrow Road.

If relegation and the sale of Snodgrass was the high price to pay to rid NCFC of Hughton, Calderwood and Trollope, then it was a price worth paying.

There may yet be more exits from the club over the next few weeks, but the end will still justify the means.

The best of luck to Adams for the coming season. It would appear that he has the squad fully behind him, and hopefully all supporters will give him plenty of slack once the new season kicks off.

Last year before the season kicked off for real and we were losing to MLS teams, the word was "it''s only practice games", as was the case when we squeaked past Dereham, but now we beat an imposter Italian team and Nice, people are acting like these matches do portend to a successful season.

So which is it?

Remember our pre season under Gunn, beat Raith, Airdie, St Johnstone, premiership Wigan and drew with championship Crystal Palace. Well we all know what happened that 1st league game.

Yet again what is evident from the brief clips is passing and movement, and the movement is quick. At times the Nice defence seemed bemused.

Perhaps the visitors were not very good - they didn''t do very well even after we had introduced several juniors in the second half, so we can''t get carried away. For the whole match we had had important team members missing - Olsson, Howson. RvW, Hooper, Lafferty.

They seem to be enjoying playing together, and team spirit seems good.

I didn''t see the game, merely the highlights, but one slightly worrying thing was to read that Ruddy had to be helped when he dropped crosses. Perhaps he was under physical pressure?

''Happy Days'' has nothing to do with results in friendlies, nor does it with players coming and going.

It has everything to do with starting the season with a new man in charge and not hapless Hughton and his two molls.

If things don''t go to plan this season then I''llstill lay the blame squarely at Hughton''s feet. Adams looks as though he is warming to the task, and the players would appear to be giving him full backing. The new found attacking intent will hopefully serve the club well, and entertainment will be back on the agenda.

Only true up to a point. Many reasonable observers on here were concerned by the lack of goals pre last season and the trouble it might bring, and indeed it did obviously

Exactly, nulli. I was one of them. But several blind CH devotees insisted it meant nothing, and all would come good once the season kicked off. And once it did, it would be fine once the team settled and the players gelled and 6 games and 10 games and he wins when he has to and there''s nobody out there and we lost to WBA to basically ensure relegation but it can''t be proven he''d have not saved the day.

Who wants a manager who only wins when he has to, anyway? That only works until the one time it doesn''t, and then its too late.

Fact was it never did though. A crap pre-season preceded a crap season that resulted in relegation. This pre-season we''ve done well, so while nothing is set in stone, it bodes well.

There are some other positives also:

1. The debt has been reduced so we have a healthier financial situation than the last time we were in the Champs with a couple of years of parachute payments.

2. Adams seems to be preparing to use the youth squad more, which is great for the future. CH never gave them much of a chance, his safety first policy preventing taking any risks with the youngsters other than the odd Murphy cameo.

3. Adams seems to have more tactical nous already. Playing Redmond up front against Chelsea frightened the life out of the Prem''s best defence and there is already talk of Plans B, C and D if A doesn''t work.

4. We have kept most of the squad together. Only hindsight will show whether Snod was the only man keeping us respectable last season or a slow, whingeing, destructive force; but him apart I am impressed that other than a few noises which we would have expected no one else has so far moved.

5. Despite relegation we''ll still have good crowds and hopefully a better home atmosphere than the frequent morgue-like experience resulting from Hughton''s turgidity. We will hopefully not need to rely on the clappers to get some noise.

This time last year I was genuinely excited when Fer, Hooper, RVW, Redmond had arrived and staggered that it all went wrong so soon. This time I am excited again, just a shame it is a league below. But I do believe that all in all we are in not too bad a shape.
