Matt Morriss

Sick of Redmond

Recommended Posts

He looks the part, although young Redmond can be frustrating at times, hopefully he will improve on the weaker aspects of his game......Then we''ll flog him for an underrated sum and replace him with Douglas Bader....

Hey!! Watch your mouth Mello. We could do with some of his fighting spirit around this club.
I thought he was ok today. Lots of his crosses early on were not bad but for some reason nobody was attacking them. There is often only one players in the box which means a cross needs to be utterly perfect to find someone. In an ideal world you want hims crossing with Grabban at the near post, Lafferty coming in at the far and someone arriving late from midfield. Also I really want to see them keep him on the right wing so he can focus on improving the final ball, rather than playing him on the left or up front. He has real potential and is always going to be inconsistent but he will be a big factor for us this season.
It was fantastic to see Redmond start on the right at last!

Redmond also needs specialist coaching, is he getting it?  Cue: Mr Huckerby.
Again - people have ridiculously high expectations of a 20 year old winger. Some of his balls in were alright today - no one attacked the near post though but the regularity in which he done it suggested he had been asked to do so by management. Also, his shooting needs improvement - but I actually like the fact he shoots quite regularly - I think you need someone like that in your team. When he''s on the ball defenders and goalkeepers have to think - Defenders know he could easily go past him - goalkeepers know he could unleash a shot. People need to stop finding a negative every bloody week. He had an alright game, he got us up the pitch and he was involved in most of our good play. Why people think we can''t afford to be patient i don''t know. Every other team in every bloody League can play developing youngsters so why the fuck can''t we?
Furthermore lets give the lad some vocal support!

The groans each time he lost the ball were a little pathetic.

Yes he was frustrating but his pace and being on the front foot ensured (together with grabban and lafferty) that watford tired early and defended incredibly deeply - while keeping Deeney etc fairly high up the pitch.    That meant there was consistently acres of space in behind the front line,   which is why johnson, wes and tettey all looked so impressive,   that had time and space on the ball which the used to the maximum.    Without the team effort, which redmonds threat is a part of,  the game would not have been so comfortable.

Without any aerial threat up front we have to get numbers in teh box,  which did not really happen on sat,   crossing with just grabban or one there becomes a futile exercise otherwise.   Redmond succeeded with just 3 of his 17 cross attempts,   which looks poor until you realise the that rest of the team combined only had 2 successful crosses from 22 - ie significnatly worse (Lafferty was the next most frequent crosser and did not land one).  As with last year (Redmond has the best success rate in crossing all season) he is outperforming the team.      More importantly just 5 good crosses from 39 says it was a waste of possession.    His passing was sound (only 4 failed to find ourplayer,  which was better than wes,  bj etc) but i accept his finishing needs to improve.

Have some patience. Even legends like Huckerby and Eadie left us frustrated with their crossing and finishing at times.      Look for the positives too  - they definitely exists alongside the obvious frustrations.
