Kent Canary 0 Posted August 25, 2005 Heard on the radio today Iwan has left Gillingham after agreeing a settlement. In my opinion, its the right move - I dont think he ever settled there and even though Hesenthaler is one of his mates the previous management structure has gone and he''s clearly not getting on well. Reduces my chances of bumping into him but hopefully He''ll find a role back up this way and eventually with City.Think I''ll read his book again. top bloke!Best of luck Iwan! AJ 1,358 Posted August 26, 2005 Roberts makes ''bitter'' Gills exit Iwan Roberts fired a stinging parting shot at Gillingham after having his contract terminated by mutual consent. Roberts lost his coaching duties at the Gills last season after falling out with then manager Stan Ternant and current assistant Ronnie Jepson. And the 37-year-old Wales international says he has been shown a "total lack of respect by certain people" at the club. "A few things have gone on that have left a bitter taste in my mouth," Roberts told BBC Wales Sport. "I''ve come to an agreement with the chairman of Gillingham Football Club for them to pay the remainder of my contract so I''m no longer a Gillingham player. "I''m very relieved because it''s been a tough eight months since (former player-manager) Andy Hessenthaler stepped down. "I''m 37 years old, been in the game for 20 years, played over 750 games, scored 239 goals and I just think the way I''ve been treated is not something you do to someone of my experience. "I''ve been shown a total lack of respect by certain people." Roberts, who had 10 months to run on his Gillingham contract, spent three months at Cambridge in League Two at the end of last season. But the striker has no acknowledged his playing days are probably over, and believes his future lies in coaching. "If I''m not going to play again it''s a sad ending to my footballing career," said Roberts, who spent the majority of his career at Norwich. "I''ve had a decent career - played for some good clubs and I''ve had the best feeling any footballer can have by playing for his country. "I''ve played against West Germany, Argentina and Brazil. People can''t take that away from me. "Coaching is now a part of the game I wouldn''t mind getting in to - I''ve definitely got something to offer. "I''ve just done the first part of my Uefa A licence in Aberystwyth and I''ve got to go and get some experience and do all the coursework before I go back next year to finish the final assessment. "I''ve learned a lot of good things over the last 20 years and if I''m totally honest I''ve learned over the past eight months how not to treat people. "I''m also enjoying all the media work I''ve done for Sky and BBC Wales and maybe if the chance came to do a little more I wouldn''t mind doing that either." im sure some club will rise to the chance to sign you roberts! its too early to end your career! come back to norwich!!!!!ok, maybe not the last one
Evil Monkey 52 Posted August 26, 2005 The man is a legend, lets get him back in some coaching capacity! Maybe he could help out with the kids whilst he completes his badges? God knows, if there''s one footballer in the city who would be able to command the respect of the children with just his name, then its big Iwan!
