Norwich City Football Club has been caught up in a pre-season row with an Italian football club about the identity of the side the Canaries beat 13-0 in a friendly on Sunday.

City had originally been due to play Italian third tier side Novara, a professional side playing in Serie C, in a friendly at their pre-season base at the Piergiorgio Perucca Stadium in the Aosta region of northern Italy.

However that match was cancelled on Sunday and the Canaries hastily organised some new opposition, which they believed to be Italian Serie D side Saint-Christophe Vallée d’Aoste, posting an update at www.canaries.co.uk

Serie D is Italy’s highest non-professional football level and is split into nine regional divisions, so when City thumped their opponents 13-0, it was not much of a surprise.

But SC Vallée d’Aoste have since asked for the Canaries to make an official apology and correction, claiming that the players Neil Adams’ team played were a selection of non-professionals from the region of Valle d’Aoste.

The Italian club posted on their website, www.vda-saintchristophe.it, saying: “The company denies the news, reported on some sites and news football, having played a friendly match against Norwich, on retreat in Saint-Vincent, Sunday, July 20.”

Norwich City have this afternoon added a correction to the match report on their official website, saying: “In our original match report for this warm-up fixture, acting in good faith on the basis of information given to the Club, we incorrectly reported that we had played against local club side SC Vallee d’Aoste.

“In fact the game was against an Aosta regional select side and we are happy to put the record straight and apologise to SC Vallee d’Aoste and their fans for the misunderstanding.

“The game was convened at very short notice following the late cancellation of our previously scheduled match against Novara.

“The hospitality shown to Norwich City Football Club by the people in Saint-Vincent and the surrounding area has been excellent and our training camp there has seen the squad continue to build their fitness levels, as we gear up for our three forthcoming friendlies against top-flight European opposition in the shape of SC Bastia, OGC Nice and Celta Vigo.”

The Canaries are due to travel across the border to France tomorrow night, to the neutral venue of the Stade d’Honneur in Sallanches, to face Ligue Un side SC Bastia.

The saving grace is it''s a truly beautiful part of the world and I''m sure they''ve had a good time in such surroundings.

As for the football, Grade A ---- up doesn''t do it justice, embarrassingly cringeworthy.

Have to admit it is a mess this pre-season. Whoever is responsible for such a mess probably won''t be announced but some lessons need to be learned.

No one at our Club.

Nothing to see here.

Keep calm and carry on.

It must have been someone at our Club Joanna, we have issued an apology/correction and it was the Club website that announced these guys were the opposition.

I''m all against needlessly attacking the club, but this is amateur stuff and not the sort of very public mistakes a multi-million pound enterprise should be making.

Hopefully lessons are learned, thats all we can/should ask when mistakes are made.

What you do is make arrangements with somebody, a time and a place.  If they don''t turn up its their fault not yours.

Yes he is right to an extent, but surely there should have been some guarantees put in place, some contracts signed or equivalent. We are professional football team and someone should have dotted the i''s and crossed the t''s. At least next time we will have a better back up plan. Hopefully.

You would expect both sides of this agreement to see some mutual benefit in these games.

The oppo must have agreed to the fixtures, why they dropped out must be a matter for them Herman.

I have not seen any statements along the lines of " we never agreed to these games" but I do take your point.

not FOUR times though?!?!?...........first Sampdoria, secondly Novara, thirdly Livorno and now it seems even the team we played the other day aren''t even who we thought they were?!?.....for 4 different clubs to pull out suggests there has been some fundemental lack of organization and gross misunderstanding somewhere along the line.
What do you think has happened here GJL
who knows?....but for the club to remain silent so far as to the reasons seems particularly strange.....if nothing else out of respect to any fans that have travelled out there..(unless of course those fans in question have been told whilst out there?)

I have been calling it for a while having a radio commentator in charge is going to end in tears. No experience and it is predictably turning into an unmitigated disaster

I''d be pretty upset if I had followed the team out there only for this to happen. I posted on another thread our pre season in 2010:

Dereham

Stevenage

Dag & Redbridge

Newcastle

Lincoln

Everton "

Now that looks like a good set of fixtures to prepare the team for a winning season in the chump.

Whilst I don''t like to criticise our own club - I don''t think any reasonable person can deny this has been a fairly big ballsup and whilst no one can blame NCFC 100% they have to take a portion of the responsibility because the chain of events suggests we probably weren''t thorough enough when it came to ensuring our pre-season..

Its a shame for Neil cos he should be able to rely on this sort of stuff being sorted out. He ends up having to compromise and rearrange which frankly is the last thing he needs. Not sending good messages to players either.

You probably wouldn''t have Mourinho as Manager as he was an interpreter.

As I understand it most of the clubs in the top divisions use agents or companies specialising in these pre-season tours to organise them rather than do it themselves - a bit like matchmakers. Although it appears the one that NCFC have chosen are not that good, or maybe it was because it was all a bit last minute and we''ve ended up with the dregs! I would assume that there are some fairly harsh conversations are going on behind the scenes that will not be made public for fear of affecting any legal settlement. I expect we will find out when all has been sorted.I may be wrong. If anyone knows more please enlighten.

You do realise Adams doesn''t go out and arrange friendlies right? He probably makes suggestions or says yes or no, but even if he does that it''s hardly his fault other clubs have pulled out. At least try to add some reality to your pathetic attempt to belittle the club you claim to support.

Interesting Chippy. I had imagined that these things were set up through our own network of contacts, people at the club using their associations to set things up. You may well be right in that a foreign tour like this is set up through an agency, if that is the case then I imagine we will see them in court.
