Im a big fan of his, with his first few months being great, but is he really man united quality?

Caught Offside - perhaps the worst website for rumours. Don''t think they are ever right.

Although van Gaal is a big fan of Fer I can''t see him wanting him at Man U quite yet. Think the entire Netherlands squad has now been linked to Man U.

I suppose if he is in the Dutch squad then he warrants a place in the Manchester United squad. He is young and destined to get better.

He strikes me as one of those players whose performance will improve in accord with the company he keeps and such a move might realise his potential more than a season in the Championship. He is not much of  fighter.

I wouldn''t want to lose his class but he could turn out to be a bit of a luxury for us next season.

"Cut-price deal" is the bit I don''t like. Same as Snoddy, at least.

Can you imagine the response of Man Utd. fans if they signed a recently relegated player from ''little old Norwich''?

Much like Mike Phelan with his splendid tash....

As I heard a presenter on Talksport saying when discussing Arjen Robben moving to Man Utd a few weeks ago (before he pointed out there was no way it was happening.) "Making it a total of 19 of Holland''s 23 man squad who have now been linked with a move to Manchester this summer".Pretty sure this is made up, especially as he only used Leroy once for 20 minutes suggesting he doesn''t rate him that highly and at 24 he''s probably not going to develop much more as a player. He''s only a couple of years younger than Fellaini and they''re a similar style of midfielder with Fellaini being a more experienced and proven player. I do like Fer, but if I was Louis I wouldn''t be buying him.

Depends what you read and what you believe.Supposedly Fellani isn''t rated by his new boss. It was also rumoured that only injuries to other players lead to Fer being in the national squad for the world cup. That said, I do like his style and I think he is a class player - probably too good to be playing more than a season at this level. Would he fit into the Man Utd squad? Yes. He is strong, he is good on the ball and has a good range of passing. Can you imagine him alongside Mata or Carrick? He might not be a stand out Man Utd signing but it wouldn''t surprise me - he''d probably be a more realistic target as well compared to a lot of the other Dutch players Man Utd have been linked to. Robben apparently has turned them down already - possibly due to the lack of Champions League football. And a lot of the other players could be expensive.

Id pack his suitcase and pay for the cab.Over rated, lazy and no fight. He already proved that, bet he really cant wait to set the championship on fire.Let him go and at £15m thank you very very much.

You know, running half the length of the pitch past a couple of players and slotting it in for a calm goal - now that''s what I call lazy.

I think this is a big problem with the English game unless you run around like a headless chicken chasing every lost cause your lazy. I thought Fer had a mixed bag as a season but the glimpses of the good things he does, make me very keen to have him here next season, potentially our best player by a country mile.

Agreed, what an asset he would be, but you certainly have to consider that a World Cup semi finalist would a) probably feel that the Championship is not his level, or b) other Clubs would definitely want him and give us a great return on what we paid, so I am 60/40 that he will be going, but we live in hope......

The article states that Van Gaal would see Fer as a better option than Tom Cleverley - surely some truth in that? [:)] Central midfield is United''s weakest area - Carrick''s out for at least a couple of months, Cleverley is awful, Fellaini still has a lot to prove, Fletcher''s career is as good as over, Anderson is on his way out, ditto Kagawa... there''s a definite space in the squad for a genuine box-to-box midfielder. Obviously they have a lot of quality going forward (Januzaj, Mata, Herrera), but someone to challenge Fellaini and Carrick for the deeper-lying roles is very important. I genuinely think Fer could be a decent squad player for United - and ''cut price'' doesn''t mean £5m, it means ''a damn sight less than they''d expect to play for a recognised world-class player''.

Fer doesn''t play ''the deeper lying role''. Van Gaal has used him exclusively as an attacking midfielder for the Netherlands, also the position he played over 30 times for the U21 team.

I think a lot of people see Fer as this big strong player and instantly assume he should be a defensive midfielder, the only issue being he can''t tackle well. McClaren tried to use him as a defensive midfielder but it didn''t really suit Fer and many in Holland said he was being wasted in that position.

It''s similar to Fellaini in that way, when played as a defensive midfielder he looks awful, when played just behind a striker he can be unstoppable.

I just think he has better defensive attributes than a specialist AM like Herrera, Kagawa etcetera. Van Gaal prefers an attacking formation and Fer could be a versatile squad midfielder capable of fitting into any formation or position to cover squad rotation, injuries and so on. If anyone can get the best out of him, it''s surely Van Gaal?

It''s the sort of role that Gerrard, Yaya Toure and Viera have played and really owned. Sometimes, picking it up a little deeper suits their game more. And as for Fellaini - he is a midfielder, he has looked shocking when playing as a forward midfielder. Lost, unsure what to do next. His best games for Everton were when he had a much more disciplined midfield role - or perhaps a more orthodox midfield role. He isn''t good enough going forward. The Belgians know that.As for Fer - to me he looked pretty clueless in the number 10 role. If you look at where he played in Holland, he was a midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation predominantly. To me, he is either a box to box player or he is best of receiving the ball a little deeper where he can choose to attack with it or pick out a good pass.As for Holland. He made one appearance. Hardly what I would call much to go on. For me, he really struggled in the hole behind the strikers last season. He didn''t know if he should come to it, make a run or to stand and flick it on. Not his best position at all.

Agree with this Chicken. When he plays as a deeper playmaker he''s the one others are looking to pass to and then he has the options to distribute the ball.

Interesting Chicken,

You mention Vieira, Yaya and Gerrad - but I would say they are 3 very different players.

As for Fellaini, I really don''t know where you are coming from to be honest. He replaced Cahill at Everton in the ''second striker'' role and thrived there. That is where he played every game for Belgium for the World Cup.

Fer has played 7 games for the Netherlands, everyone of them as an attacking midfielder, he was rotated with Sneijder in the warm up games as that is where van Gaal saw his best position. Obviously his strength means he has a different game to Sneijder but they played similar positions - this was also the case for the 30 odd U21 games.

I think Fer has many skills, but he isn''t quite disciplined enough positionally to sit deeper. You mentioned Gerrard and I would say that is a good example, Gerrard was one of the best attacking midfielders in the World at the peak of his career, only when he got older did he move into a deeper role. Unfortunately he was shown up in the World Cup due to his lack of positional sense or discipline, always wanting to move higher up the pitch to be more involved and make things happen.

Fer can be a box-to-box player as you say, but he can be most effective higher up the pitch where he can pick out passes or hit shots.

If that is good enough for van Gaal, then it is good enough for me.

Chicken, Bethnal, interesting points

I personally also see him as a more attacking, driving midfielder. This is the kind of player that Everton were after when they were in for him, and in fact their next option when the deal for Leroy fell through was to try and get Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla, if I recall.

I think Leroy is wasted in a deeper, more defensive-minded role

I think Leroy is wasted in a deeper, more defensive-minded role[/quote]It''s an interesting discussion this, and I think the truth is somewhere in the middle ground. While Fer clearly has the dynamism and creativity to make an impact going further forward, he also has the mental and physical strength to make an impact in the hurly-burly of the ''engine room''. I''m not saying his best position is as a ''DM'', but I think he has more of an all-round game and would (somewhat paradoxically!) be wasted as an out-and-out AM. He has the ability to win the ball and protect it well, and also has the technique and speed to be able to dribble dangerously through the centre of the park. With better players around him, I think he could be a real asset as a midfielder who could play AM or DM roles, but would thrive as one of two or three traditional ''CM'' midfielders, as indeed he did alongside Howson and Tettey last season. Would be very surprised if someone didn''t cough up enough money to make us bite before August is out.

I would love fer to be here for this season as Hughton completely wasted his talents last season, but let''s look at this from a business point of view:

Will keeping Fer make the difference between making at least the play-offs or not?

Will his talents be suited to the Championship?

If the answer to these is yes then he is worth more to us than any realistic transfer fee.

If the answer is no then the chance to make at least £5 million on him seems too good to lose.

According to the Times, Sevilla are interested in Fer, but the money is the probable stumbling block. This from the original source:

Good luck with the google translation.

Don''t think LF will be suited to Championship and likely to sulk. Get rid but not for peanuts QPR are offering. If cannot sell offer to Everton on season long loan for £2/3 m loan fee and wages paid. £6m fee on expiry of loan if City not promoted. However upfront fee of £10m for world cup scorer is not overly expensive looking at other fees being paid.
