"We have the highest-quality managers in Europe knocking on our door,"

Recommended Posts

Southampton just finished 8th in the top division of English football.
Norwich were just relegated from the top division of English football, have lost a large proportion of their income and any manager is going to have to face up to the prospect of rebuilding the squad.
Those are massive differences in circumstances that are obviously going to effect interest in the managerial position.

its not we couldnt find anyone, its we scoured europe and could find no one better to get us out of the championship so by a leap of norfolk deduction I assume that neyul has knocked at st marys door too and must be in the running...

There is an interesting point of comparison with Southampton for Norwich.

At the start of the 2009-10 season Southampton started on -10 points - they narrowly missed the play-offs and Norwich, of course, topped Division 1.

Four season on .......

Their success has been from the young talent of Shaw, Lallana (who would''ve thought he would be this good?) and the strange masterstroke of appointing Pocchitino ....whereas we appointed Hughton, decided to sack him with 5 games to go with someone even worse, then have now decided to give that man the job. I guess its about decisions. They decided to keep Shaw when they could have sold him for quite a bit last season, and its paid off for them

"We have moderate quality managers in Europe knocking on our door,"
Would still have made more sense to appoint someone with experience, even if the CV is patchy.

Going into administration is a lottery and Southampton were lucky with their subsequent owners, managers and the continued development of young players.

At Norwich the club is (rightly) proud of having cleared its debts but, presumably, this was a financial drain that Southampton did not endure.

"I guess its about decisions."No.It''s about the fact Southampton added to a good squad with some serious money signings on those four years where as we bounced up and hoped for the best with the same squad we had in league one!Oh and they took bold and expensive managerial decisions where as we backed ourselves into a corner when Malky stalled.

But you''ve illustrated my point. We made the wrong decisions, we didn''t get the right managers in (and look to have made the worst possible choice in Adams) and we made the wrong decisions in other personnel, e.g. strikers. whereas Southampton got the right players in and the right manager who is now managing spurs because he did so well.

Hindsight.

Would you have been confident Pochettino would be a success when Adkins was sacked? Would you have put money that Lallana would be worth an England place two years ago?

It''s entirely possible Adams will get us promoted and be successful in the PL but without the support of us supporters it''s much less likely. Get behind our team!

Actually, it''s not about hindsight but foresight or, at least, not ignoring the facts as they were presented to us on the pitch for the last 18 months.

Indeed, it was the ''support'' of the former management team when the failing were obvious to so many that landed us back in the Championship. Unfortunately, for reasons about which we can only speculate until memoirs are wriiten, mistakes of last season look set to be exacerbated by decisions of this.

Obviously we don''t have the brightest posters in Europe posting on this message board if the comments are anything to go by.

The key reason for Sotons success is that they have been heavily subsidised by a benefactor who had local connections.

It seems that either there must be some kind of bizarre news blackout or some people are so parochial that they are completely unaware of what goes on outside of Norfolk.

I really hope that many posters on here are trolling for some strange reason otherwise the level of ignorance and stupidity is concerning as it suggests that the image of norfolk as not very bright country bumpkins may actually hold some truth.

Once again T is talking sense. Some of the posters on here make me cringe.

Southampton have also produced some fantastic talent from their academy over the last few years, something I hope we can emulate.

And the posters judging Neil on the last 5 games, give me a break! He took over a hughton side that was demoralised and already down and to be honest he done quite well.

Clearly it is not just down to money and Soton have obviously done well with their academy and choice of manager but ultimately Soton finished exactly where you would expect them to given their financial resources. It would just be refreshing to see some people move beyond the emotional blame response and have more perspective on reality.

Dave Stringer on the other hand with his experience I suspect is talking a lot of sense with his comments reported today.

When Lambert left, McNally said that something along the lines of "you always have an eye on managers in case you end up losing yours". That being the case, why didn''t we identify that person at xmas and go after him in early 2014?

I think you''ll find that this question has already been answered, they had a look, didn''t fancy anyone and stayed with what they had.

Southampton are about to enter a very difficult third season in the prem. not only have they lost an inspirational manger but the heart of their team that the success as been built on is about to be sold. They are one bad hughtonesque appointment from being in the same boat as us.

Until Neil proves us wrong, which I hope he does, I can only agree with you Bor. But we would have needed to have been a bit more patient - let the premiership appointments take place first ad then see who we can attract when we became the most attractive job then around.

The problem is that we did not obey the rules of the pecking order. In the natural world if you try to eat ahead of your turn you may get a couple of scraps but will be swatted away and left to lick your wounds. Thme animals that have patience and wait their turn, well they may not get the prime meat but they get enough to be able to survive and grow. By rushing the appointment we have failed to accept that we have dropped down the pecking order.

T is spot on.When Southampton were relegated to League One they signed Rickie Lambert for £1million.And they have continued to spend relatively highly for the divisions they were in. Ramirez cost them a rumoured £12million. Then you have to consider wages etc. Most of this because they were able to wipe their debt clean through bankruptcy which was quite sneakily dealt with and left the way open for a takeover that meant a new owner only had to invest in the squad etc rather than buying debts etc.

As we are on about Southampton, let''s see who they actually end up with, out of those "highest-quality managers in Europe"  and would they have met all the criteria of our board ?

Because we are similar sized clubs, it''s always tempting to compare Norwich with Southampton. But T is essentially correct. You do not have to scratch that far beneath the surface to reveal the differences. The financial ones have been well documented. I prefer to contrast the actions of the Chairmen /CEO''s . At St Mary''s when it became obvious that Adkins was not up to the job they acted quickly. They risked, and there was a lot of, disgruntlement from the fans. But it worked out in the end. And rather well too. Comfort two seasons ago and an 8th place finish last time out.Contrast that with Carrow Rd. It was blindingly obvious at a pretty early stage that Hughton was not going to cut the mustard, but instead of acting, our board dithered and made excuse after excuse. It was only at a later stage that the fans became disgruntled, but by then it was too late. Narrowly missing relegation by the skin of our teeth two seasons ago, and then relegated this time.As others have said, we''ll just have to wait and see how the appointments of Neil Adams at Norwich and Mr AN Other at Southampton work out, but it''s not always a good idea to compare how things are at both clubs.
