swjf50 0 Posted April 28, 2014 Wickham''s goals look like they''ve saved Sunderland from the drop. Does anyone think we should have taken a gamble on him? Still young, a good target man with a few goals in him, when managed properly.Unfortunately he''s a binner I know but so what if he had kept us up, he''d have become a hero.Kevin Phillips is also one who has never failed to score where ever he has been and we could have brought him in for the season to help out. Bony if we had the money before he moved to Swansea and Shane Long..Is there anyone else we missed out on?Who did we get in January? Elmander, not noted for his scoring ability, the wrong side of 30 and lacking in pace.
Guest Posted April 28, 2014 There''s no doubt that the single biggest failing this season has been replacing Holt, and strengthening the attack with a proven goalscorer. It is fair to criticise the management in terms of general play, but there''s no doubt that our strikers have struggled to take their chances. Without that "big man" who can score AND hold the ball up we have really struggled to make an impact against teams from set pieces, which was a major strength last season. That said, Hooper has more goals than Wickham this season doesn''t he? BroadstairsR 2,096 Posted April 28, 2014 The fact that Wickham has suddenly come good after a couple of years playing the over-priced flop demonstrates that there is the thickness of a sheet of paper between a striker failing or succeeding. There are lot''s of examples of this. It is down to confidence. Let''s hope the same applies to RVW. If he regains his confidence he will probably get his scoring touch back. Probably not with us though.
GJP 79 Posted April 28, 2014 I''ve always thought Wickham would come good at this level - it''s just a shame he''s chosen to do so right now. As I said on another thread recently, we get told there''s "no value in January" but plenty of teams have done business in January. To only get Yobo and Gutierrez was a disaster. Shane Long was on the market, how much of a boost would he have been? Pacey but can hold the ball up, knows the ropes in this league and can score a goal. The previous January was also handled pretty poorly too.

Hughton has ripped the heart out of this club and I fear it will take a special manager to lift us again.
