How does the club get round the challenge of scouting when its so precarious what division we may be in. For instance, have we spent all season scouting international players on the continent, who would cost many millions, because if so, what do we do if we go down? All of a sudden none of those players looked at would be realistic. Alternatively, if we scout with the fear of relegation in mind and look at championship players exclusively, because we might get relegated, how do we then progress. Does the club continually scout on two levels, creating targets for a championship season and a Premiership season? Or do we just hope relegation doesnt happen and then cram before next summer if it does? (hard to do of course because noone is playing). Relegation must scupper everything when it comes to player recruitment. Anyone got any insight into how the club gets round this problem?

Tom does indeed flock to any discussion with the word "scout" involved. Just the other day on the non-football section, a thread on Robert Baden-Powell turned into how to spot a gem in the Ryman League.

In respect of the OP its a good question and one I don''t know the answer to. You''d hope we would plan for a variety of situations, but then who knows how many scouting resources we have...

Well up until 3-4 weeks back I suspect the Board were planning on the basis of next season in the Prem so you''d expect they''d have a good idea of targets they''d like to go for if that still happens.

My guess is that behind the scenes at Carrow Road there are contingency plans for relegation being frantically updated.

We may survive, we may be relegated, and we may be in the Championship for a few years.

I suspect that potential players of Premiership ability will either turn us down, or will sign for us as a stepping stone to something better. So the decision may not be ours.

We shall have some money - TV and umbrella money, and we are not in debt. So we aim high, at players with potential and one or two younger players for the future.

There is unlikely to be an immediate "bounce back" to the Premiership, and there will need to be a building up over a few years. We now know that our squad contains very few clearly Premiership level players, and these may leave or be tempted away.

If, as many now suspect, we shall be relegated, then we need scouts and management to stabilise our position in the Championship, and build for promotion.
