How Long Before We Get Premier League 2?

Recommended Posts

The table this season (and last) shows us the top 8 or 9 being way clear of the also rans. So bearing this in mind how long before the 10 or so scrapping down the bottom with lesser finances are condemned to Premier League 2?

Haven''t heard much about the "breakaway European Super League" recently either.

Not sure how much longer this league(s) within league thing can go on - presumably until Sky/Premier League realise it''s really not terribly exciting viewing down there.

I think a European league is the likelier outcome within ten years.

You only have to look at how Sky progressed our domestic rugby union to a European competition that works.

The thing that encapsulates the football world is that in the Premiership the smaller teams can quite often beat the top clubs, that''s why it will not change.

Im not sure that it is even the Premier League anymore. For the top sides the priority is Champions League qualification, if they actually win the league then its a bonus.

Then there are the good, but not quite good enough sides that strive to be a top four side but generally never quite make it. These teams are often in a catch 22 situation over player recruitment and finances. Top players don''t want to join or stay unless they can play in Europe, but they cannot get into Europe unless players join or stay. Being in the Champions League means you can offer higher wages but you have to gamble on paying higher wages and risking the clubs future to get into the league.

Next are a handful of "safe" sides, might get into the UEFA league, but will suffer the next season due to not having the squad quality in the numbers required for Europe and the Premier League..

Then you have the newly promoted and the teams without a major sugar daddy investor who will finish in the bottom half who`s priority is survival for another season.

There is no way for a "small" club to break into the top four under its own finances.

Financial fairplay is a joke, the top 4-6 sides have a virtual monopoly, Champions League gives access to more money than those that don''t qualify, which they reinvest to stop any other clubs catching them so they qualify again.

Sky money has done a lot for football and I love the number of games you can now watch but sometimes I long for the days when a team like Nottingham Forrest under Cloughie could win the league, would not, could not happen now.

My thinking too.  You only need somebody to throw money at it and it''ll happen.
