Reggie Strayshun 0 Posted December 22, 2013 As your thread title implies, these sort of stats are (mildly) interesting, MP.But completely meaningless.Anyone can take a certain run of games ,or differentiate between home/away, or exclude games against the top clubs (that seems à la mode with certain factions on here !) etc etc. But, all you can do is look at the proper table, and more interesting (to me at any rate) is the gap between you and the relegation places (or promotion/play off ones in the lower leagues). As someone on another thread said, Boxing day''s match v Fulham is HUGE. Win and we are 9 pts clear. Lose and it''s likely down to 3 again.

Win and you are likely to move up the table. Lose and you will likely go down the table. So every week is huge. We know we are more likely to be beaten by the top clubs as often as not, but in the seasons both under Lambert and Hughton, what has kept us up is the points gained from top clubs. So every week is huge, whoever it is against.
Reggie Strayshun 0 Posted December 22, 2013 So you are saying that a game against ,say, Everton or Newcastle, who we are unlikely to be vying for position with come May is just as important as denying someone else (eg Fulham) 3 pts to make up on us , Lakey.??!! Sorry, mate, but Boxing day is a six-pointer, make no mistake. As George Orwell once said, and I paraphrase, ''all teams are equal, but some are more equal than others''. We stayed up because we beat Arsenal and Man Utd last season and the same the season before beating Spurs away and taking points off Chelsea and Aresenal and Liverpool, as well of course as all the other results, but those against the big clubs were just as important as all the rest. Of course I recognise "6 pointers" as being significant, but only in so far as pushing other teams back. Where we ultimately finish depends on every match equally. Reggie Strayshun 0 Posted December 22, 2013 You''ve completely missed the point again, Lakey. I''m not for one minute suggesting that at this level all games are not important. They only will cease to be, as far as I''m concerned, if and when we are mathematically safe from relegation. And that day will come all the quicker if we deny our rivals points. And I maintain that come mid may we are likely to be much closer points wise to Fulham, West Ham Palace etc than to Everton , Newcastle, let alone Man U or Arsenal ! All that matters is us getting points. And we need points from anywhere we can get them - so it makes EVERY game of equal importance. Or are you saying the three points we got against MU or Arsenal last season were less important than three points home to Sunderland - or any of the other lower teams we won against. Lose to Fulham but win against ManUtd still gives us three points. Fulham may have an extra three points, but then that means they will have three extra points and will help push someone else lower down the table instead of them. But not necessarily us. If we get enough points through the season against all opposition it doesn''t matter a flying fig who they were got from. Points are what matters, not who they are against. I won''t deny that it helps us to push other teams down, but it is not the main issue. The main issue is points - and as every season proves, they can come from anywhere at any time against any opposition.
vos 155 Posted December 22, 2013 Current form is really no different from rest of season. We have just played several very very average teams and we should have taken more points, which we will need as we have a very tough run in at the end of the season. Dubai Mark 0 Posted December 22, 2013 Interesting comment vos, but I see it that we have actually played a larger percentage of teams from the top half of the table and several teams who at the time were on a good run of form, for example, when we played Spurs even though the performance wasnt great it was against a Spurs side who were playing very well at that time, when we beat Southampton the same applies.....and Arsenal.....and Liverpool....and Man City......Palarse were even on a better run with a new Manager when we played them and at the weekend we played a Sunderland team who all of the so called "experts" thought were a dead cert for a home win, In addition we have suffered injuries to key players and still managed to scramble some points.......I like the half full approach :-)
Zak Van Burger 0 Posted December 22, 2013 The current form league table doesn''t lie the four worst teams are right at the bottom.

Highland Canary 76 Posted December 22, 2013 Given we are towards the end of the easier half of the season, one would hope that both the form guide and league table would put us well clear of the relegation positions.
CambridgeCanary 0 Posted December 22, 2013 Go on then I''ll bite. But by what bizarre logic is this the easier half of the season?
