Baiting the "opposition"

Recommended Posts

Just a personal observation...

One of the most depressing things of modern life is the platform the 24-hour news cycle and the internet has given to those who apparently wish to divide and then vilify those of a different opinion. This is especially evident in the constant political whining from left and right - tiresome in the extreme.

For example I found what Paddy Davitt wrote to be interesting, but IMO the article wandered around and didn''t seem to relate to the provocative headline (and I wonder why he chose to write it now, rather than after Fulham) - but it was immediately seized on as evidence for SNAFU along with a demand to acknowledge the "rightness" of the views offered up by those who''s first task appears to be to divide. Just one example, it happens the other way around too.

But life isn''t black and white, thank goodness .. It''s fine, and fun to debate, but ..... well that''s all I wanted to say.

Good post Surfer. But I''ve seen it all before too many times. If Paddy Davitt came out in support of my views I wouldn''t see that as any vindication. Just like the rest of us if he was any good at football management he wouldn''t have to write about others that are. His is an opinion. An opinion that''s no more valid than any of ours.

To sum it up I think supporting a club is hard enough without trying to run it as well. My faith remains with the board. Glad I don''t have to do it. And a question for those who disagree.. would you like Davitt to have McNally''s job?

Surely we do not wish our reporters to resort to anodyne statements. If their judgement is that things are getting worse, and after so many games without a win, when one or two were expected to be "three points in the bag", how are they supposed to dress it up, and why?

They are employed as experts, and we expect them to tell it as they see it. Support among fans seems to be split, so if the writers adopt any position, they are doomed - too balanced and both sides will find it unacceptable or weak, coming down too heavily on one side will mean disappointment or disbelief for those on the other side.

We all ought to be ready to think about what they write, whether or not their view is ours, and use this board to praise or condemn accordingly.

Of course they are Nutty.

Otherwise news outlets would just employ people who could write the most quality(?) writing in a short space of time to fill pages. Not a whole host of writers to cover different topics and subjects.

But just because they are experts doesn''t mean they are right, just like because Hughton is manager doesn''t mean every choice he makes is right. Players make mistakes on the pitch, managers make mistakes elsewhere. Journalists make mistakes in their writing.

Surely if Archant invite Iwan Roberts to write a column he''d be employed as an expert? What''s Paddy Davitt done to make his opinion any more "expert" than yours buddy?

Well he probably doesn''t love Johnson, that''s a good start ;)

And he''s (presumably) got the qualifications. That''s all that really matters. He''ll have chosen he specialism got the job and that''s what counts.

Doesn''t mean me and you can''t and won''t say just as valid and insightful. Doesn''t mean neither of us are capable of writing to his standard. But as it is, he''s the ''expert'' because it''s his career, not necessarily because he''s anymore insightful or clever when it comes to analysing football.

He can certainly write better than me. That''s what he''s trained and qualified to do. But he''s not a football expert. Neither am I.

Well i come on here to debate and give relevant opinion. I know some won''t like what i say and i''ll even change my mind sometimes, but at least I keep it relevant. The thing that grinds my gears is when i click on an interesting thread seeing what''s developed and it''s turned into a slagging match or gone off on a complete tanget.
