What confused you about football when you were a young'un

Recommended Posts

I''ve just read that despite their vast wages some R Madrid players still get free cars and it reminded me of when I was growing up it was rare for one of our players to have a club sponsored card, the first player I was aware of who had such a ''perk'' was Ted McDougall because I saw it parked outside the ground and it had his name on the side.

I was also reminded of the stuff my brother would tell me that was designed to confuse me, when a manager was sacked and he was replaced with a caretaker manager he told me that it was the actual caretaker who took over, I believed him for at least a week. The other one was related to players sponsored cars, he told me that as part of the sponsorship deal that if that player was driving to the ground on a match day and they saw a supporter they had to stop a give them a lift.

Why did Charlie Billington look more like a fat clown than a centre half.I never did work that one out.

the first game i saw was against west ham, the 2nd against villa.. for a whole i wondered why every team wore Claret and we wore yellow?my next game i think was either millwall or Notts County, which soon dispelled the myth.i was 26 at the time.... ;)

I went to school in Norfolk and always wondered why nobody else supported Norwich City....the only other boy in my class who did follow City  also had a season ticket at Ipswich, and most of the rest followed Leeds United!

My dad recently told me a story from the first time he took me to a game, aged 6.

The conversation went like this:

Me: dad, people are wearing

Dad: Yes, I''m afraid lots of adults do at football games

Me: I understand that, but they are swearing at OUR players.

Little did I know.

I thought that if you finished bottom of Division 4 you got relegated into the Scottish Premier because of how the results and tables were listed in the newspapers.

I asked (innocently) my Dad if this was the case in front of a Scottish work colleague of his, to this day I think he still believes I was put up to it.

Ha! I remember when Kenny dalglish left Liverpool and the news said Liverpool had appointed a caretaker manager. I genuinely believed it was the guy who swept up, and also wondered who would now clean the stadium. I also remember the news reader announcing once that peter Beardsley had scored a hat-trick. I thought he''d done a bit of magic during the game involving a hat and maybe a rabbit!
