Soft questions from the local media

Recommended Posts

I think the local media ask the players and manager soft questions. So

soft that the reporters questions present the answers and excuses to the

manager & players.For example;Reporter "You must have thought...?"Player "Yeah that''s right..."

I think you hold too much store about the soap opera that surrounds the PL. The press interviews are incidental. If we''re doing well people view them positively and if we''re not they view them negatively. The players and managers do them because that''s what they''re contracted to do. And it''s that very fact that renders them useless.

I think the PL are missing a trick here. They could include the board and or CE in these contracts. That way they''d have to comment on managers futures.

It''s an interesting one this Nige.

Yes, the PL contracts players and managers to do interviews, but there is clearly no clause dictating exactly what questions they must answer, what they must say, and what info they divulge. Hence the somewhat anodine responses.

Your idea of including the board in these contracts firstly would be very difficult to enforce as many are not employees per se, and secondly, again they would doubtless get round the sort of questions you suggest re managers etc, by giving responses that were non committal at best.

And it''s for those very reasons that the press conferences are a waste of time. Press conferences don''t score goals or get points. People hankering after some latter day Robin Day figure getting them their pound of flesh won''t make the slightest difference to anything.

Tend to agree with you (see ,there IS some common ground between us !). Press Conferences have outlived their usefulness. They are needed by the 24 hr sport media to fill up space, in the same way that the rolling 24 hr news channels need hour after hour of speculation and repetition to fill time.

Only if you get a skilful interviewer (you mention Robin Day....perhaps David Frost or Paxo would be others) , or the manager/player is VERY candid, will you get anything earth-shattering. But your average regional sports hack just is not of the requisite standard, I''m afraid. And players/managers go on courses these days to learn how to stall the media, don''t they ?

Of course players and management receive media training but that doesn''t mean to say that reporters should give them such an easy ride by putting words into the mouths of those being interviewed. If the reporters ask good questions then people are more likely to listen to their radio shows, purchase the newspapers etc.It is also in the interests of managers to be asked good questions so that they can explain the logic behind what they were trying to do. Unless that is, the manager is useless. As others have said, the interviews have become somewhat pointless but the main reason why is because of those asking the questions.

someone needs to just ask him ''how long do results carry on like this before you consider resignation? ''  and ''how much longer do you think the board will give you with results like this?''and''why dont you start redmond on the right wing and two strikers you incompetent half wit even a blue square linesman could see thats his best position....''
