Why don't we press teams?

Recommended Posts

Yet another example yesterday of Hughton''s bizarre tactics, We don''t press teams anymore, there is no urgency to get the ball back, We just sit with 9 men behind the ball, none of them really marking, just guarding space if you will, And allow the opposition to pick as many passes as they want. You don''t allow the opposition time to play, especially of the quality we will face every week in this league. For a so called defensive manager he can''t even get the defence right.

Because he is so concerned with keeping the shape. You can see yesterday how top players don''t just stay in an area on the pitch, they pass, move and interchange. That''s how you break teams down, with movement, something our players aren''t allowed to do. Also by keeping this shape it doesn''t encourage pressing. We just sit back, allow the opposition all the time in the world to do what they want. It''s an outdated approach that will take us down.

I agree. Was one of the most frustrating things at spurs and seems like we did it again yesterday. The players just drop off and seem to have been instructed to play some sort of zonal defensive system but with nobody actually marking their men. At spurs Johnson actually left his man a few times because he seemed so worried at being dragged out of his "patch." We seem content just to let the good teams have the ball, often in our own half. It''s bizarre and terrible tactics that do not have a hope of working against this level if opposition.

spot on mate. they seem to end up not marking, not pressing and standing in an area doing nothing.
