Bring back standing at football

As we are trying to move forward do you think??

We have to have a dose of realism in the league. There are 12/13 teams very closely matched all in all. I feel we are as likely to finish 7th as we are to finish 18th. The difference between 7th and 8th is pretty minimal, even 7th and 17th in the grand scheme of things. The difference between 17th and 18th is absolutely massive.

That is why we (and 12 other teams) are where we are.

Imagine you have a 11 sided dice (hypothetical as it''d be pretty impossible to have) to roll and on 10 of the faces you win amounts of money varying between £12 million and £5m. On the 11th side, you lose £200 million.

If you had £20 million in the bank, would you risk rolling that dice, knowing full well if it lands on the bad side, you and your generations to come will be slaves to your debts?

It is that situation that we are in and will be as long as we are in the premiership. We may nick a place in Europe via 7th place, the fair play league or one of the cups but as it stands, that is our peak. Swansea hit it last season. It would take an unbelieveable year from any one of the lower 13 clubs to breach the top 4. Occasionally a few crossovers can happen like Newcastle and Everton, but they were miles away from the champions league.

People say we are all closing the gap what with RVW, Osvaldo and Bony all costing big money, but then Spurs go out and spend £26m on Soldado, Liverpool spend £60m on Suarez and Carroll and suddenly our purchases don''t even compare to the ''non champions league'' clubs.

Enjoy the premiership ride whatever it brings and just be thankful that the longer we are here and acting responsibly, the longer we''ll have a well run competitive club to support unlike Portsmouth and Coventry and others like them that have fallen into the abyss and don''t look like returning anytime soon.

Pretty much the best we could ever hope for is finishing 10th-ish and having some cup success.

Does winning the Cups and getting into the Europa League actually represent a pot of gold, Jimmy ? I honestly do not know what the financial pot is these days, but if we did get into it, chances are we''d be saddled with a group along with teams from Israel, Ukraine, Belarus etc, all involving 4 hr flights for a game on a Thursday night, and without the attraction of big gate payouts.

Of course the kudos of winning some silverware is a big draw, but, frankly,I''d opt for Prem safety every time, which is what CH has alluded to this week.

Just ask Wigan !!
