A 4-4-1-1 can be harder to defend as well. The player in the hole drifts between the defence and the midfield and creates issues. Either you mark him zonally, in which case he will often find gaps, or you man mark him with a defender or a midfielder. If a defender man marks him then it 1v1 in the centre of defence, you have to be more direct and use the striker to take advantage of this, if a midfielder marks him than your centre midfielders have more room to operate in and need to use this space effectively. That''s the big issue for me at the moment, our central midfielders are not using the extra space a number 10 can create for you as the opposition look to nullify him to its full effect.

The even bigger issue for me is that on Saturday they still couldnt even when the opposition had one player less

The current system is unsustainable as RvW is too isolated. He''s only played two games and doesn''t look entirely happy - I''m sure he came to Norwich because he wanted to play football.

He needs to play with Hooper, or Hooper playing slightly deeper. Elmander can replace either of those with 20 minutes to go.

At home we should be either 4-4-2, or 4-4-1-1, while away, we can go with our favoured formation of 4-6-0, which proved so successful at the weekend.

The Hull game is slightly different. They didn''t bother with pressing or any form of agressive marking because they were reduced to ten men. As soon as they lost the ball, they retreated into two banks of four and camped on the edge of their area. They maintained an extremely disciplined shape for an extremely long time and made very few mistakes when defending. It was hard to break them down, we kept the ball very well in our half and the midfield, but struggled when in their third. The central midfield of Howson and Tettey (later Fer) actually did quite well in the second half, spreading the ball around the field and occasionally bursting forward to try and force Hull to press (they have to deny space to midfielders charging through the centre, it''s suicidal not to) but the wide players weren''t playing with the same urgency and needed to cross earlier than they did, particularly when they brought on Elmander to offer a bigger aerial threat.
