Oh gawd. If there is one word that ought to be banned from football message-boards it is "legend". But moving on. Holt deserves recognition for his achievements. But not blind loyalty.He had a brilliant first season in the Premier League. He had a poor second season. And although the tactics employed were a factor it was also obvious he was in decline as a player. Interestingly a look at a - rather sane - Southampton message-board suggests the same dilemma there with Lambert.Elmander (about whom I still have doubts) will not have as good a season as Holt did in 2011-12. He will have a better season than did Holt in 2012-13 or than Holt would have had if he had stayed here this season.

Doesn''t feel right describing Holt as a legend whilst he is still playing, makes more sense to wait until he retires at least.

That doesnt really tell the whole story though does it?.  The reasons why he wanted to go were because he didnt enjoy the role he was asked to play or the defensive nature that the team was being set up.

Now if we''re going to be playing Elmander with RVW/Hooper ,I wonder what Holt''s thoughts may have been if he had been told that he was playing the Elmander role alongside another striker instead of playing a lone role, with Redmond on the wing and Fer supporting from midfield?...His desire to leave may have been a rather different one?

The OP is correct, there is nothing that Elmander did yesterday that Holt couldn''t, Holt''s game was always dropping deep, chasing accross the line, going out wide.....his main critiscsim from may fans was that he did too much of that and wasnt in the box enough a times.He could have still done all of that ,only now we would have an RVW in the box.

Holty mainly left due to negative tactics. He said so himself.

A reason, possibly, but hardly the only one. He made it plain he wanted to move back to his family roots. As to whether Holt could have done what Elmander did yesterday, the Holt of 2011-12 could have done. But the Holt of last season was not a Premier League-quality player, and it is fair to assume he would not have recaptured that earlier form. More probably his decline would have continued.

We haven''t seen Elmander in a one on one, which defeated Holt too often, so a final verdict waits. So far I would have to say that Elmander has  better touch and control and is perhaps a little quicker. I expected him not to "mix it" as much as Holt, but he clearly relishes contact and doesn''t shirk. Holt struggled as a lone striker, and most of things I shall remember him for were in the lesser challenge of the Championship and below

 

So far, and probably eventually, a better player.

as I said, if he was playing in yesterdays team instead of Elmander it would have been in a system more akin to 2011/12 and not the one of last season where he was playing the lone role, which inturn would have seen him more effective. As for his family situation, he said on the ''scrimmage'' a couple of weeks ago that it wasn''t at all the major factor in wanting to move as it was a situation he was used to and would hae been prepared to do again.

Holt was and probably still is a far better footballer than he is ever given credit for.

Yes he no longer wanted to be at ncfc so he moved on.

He had a fantastic touch and was always much more than an old fashioned no9.

He could have comfortably played the role that Elmander is (and im sure would have preferred it to feeding off scraps last year)
