Sir Budgie Paddon

Bostik, cushions and Ram Raiders.......they were the days!

Recommended Posts

I haven''t still got any rosettes City1st and my yellow and green wooden rattle has long since been firewood. I had a yellow and green homemade scarf that stood out like a sore thumb. When Sunderland came to Carrow Road for a cup tie in the 60s their fans kicked me, nicked the scarf and chucked it in the river. I got some revenge the following week when John Manning scored the winner in the Roker Park replay. That result also won me a tanner off my Nan! I remember we had to wait for the late night news bulletin and hope they gave the result. If they hadn''t I wouldn''t have known til the following mornings newspaper!

So what''s your oldest colours ?Mr prized yellow and green bar scarf (corretc shade) and a striped college scarf that was a Xmas present in the early 70''s and a yellow and green bobble hat (without the bobble)Lost my ''sateen'' scarf in a ''bundle'' at Portsmouth 75, can''t remember what happened to the flag I bought outside of Norwich station on the way down to the 73 Cup Final. Also had a plastic cap in the early seventies that was similar to the French Kepi (what their police wear)  - had that confiscated at school when I wore it in assembly for a dare .... probably still there in the headmasters study.

nutty - quiz cluesearliest of the two signings shared the same surname as a much later playerother signing played in the 1974 world cup
It was only the second division but there were some great stand out moments during the 60''s. The Man Utd cup victory, the record attendance v Leicester, our first League Cup triumph, Laurie Sheffields debut hat trick etcAt the time it felt like we were just marking time in that division but I still have fond memories of the games and players from that time, the great Ron Davies, Kevin Keelan goalkeeper showman supreme, Tommy Bryceland the little magician, Billy Punton giving full backs a roasting down the left and other great characters like Joe Mullett, Freddie Sharp and Gerry Mannion. There were  also memories of some very tough times for the club but it makes you realise how far we have come and how lucky we are to have what we''ve got today.

perhaps you are amongst that lot
That one at the top left, I''m sure I can spot Roy MaCrohan, Terry Allcock, Matt Crowe and Sandy Kennon. The bottom right looks like they are queuing up for semi final cup tickets with their little vouchers that were handed out at the previous reserve game. I got mine and when I joined the queue on the Sunday morning it was already as far as the Pineapple pub near Trowse bridge.

I don''t know how you can call yourself a true supporter, nutty. I have two rosettes from the late fities or early sixties. With the older one the "green" has faded to a kind of funereal middling grey. The other one, with the colours still recognisable, has a little tin FA Cup in the middle.

Reckon it was Ted because he was Clive Edward Payne. Or so it says in Glorious Canaries! Anyway, he was one of the select few Norfolk born to play in the top tier with Norwich City. Now there''s a task......

That would have been the game at Charlton which we won. Remember hoping over the puddles behind the stand and being amazed at the awesome East Stand one of the biggest terraces in the country - I believe it was closed at the time

Yes!! Great spot Tilly! I considered him and then in my mind I thought he was earlier but he did play 27 top tier games. So unless anyone can come up with another name your Steve Grapes leads the appearance chart for Norwich born players playing for City in the top tier : -

Steve Grapes 24

Clive Woods 21

Paul Wilson 35 mins.

Ricardo.. you left Mal Lucas out of your list. Him and Tommy Bryceland were two of my early favourites. He had a power shot!!

So many happy (and not so happy) memories since my first game in 1959 vs Cardiff in the Cup. Got in after half time when the gates were opened, seeing Terry Bly (RIP) get the winner with a Bly Blockbuster.

Other random memories:

- At the worst of the troubles a game against Coventry sticks out in my memory when the visiting supporters ran amoke with Stanley knives.

-Taking my young brother in law to the infamous Man Utd game and watching it in the Barclay. The BBC had been following the Man U supporters all day and had been winding them up with tragic consequences. One of the few games where you could "feel" the atmosphere. I knew there would be real trouble so I took my brother in law out 15 minutes before the end, thank goodness.

-The half time scores at the river end were put up on a large "scoreboard" at the corner of the river end with the South Stand.

-At one match (I think away) when someone threw a bottle at Gerry Mannion. He picked it up and threw it back in the crowd!!!

-Waiting for the Pink Uns to be delivered to the newsagent at the top of City Road (Strivens I think).

- Playing away against Leyton Orient in the Cup when Roger Gibbins got a last minute equaliser. In those days one side of their ground was reserved for visiting supporters. Unfortunately since this was a mid-week game there were plenty of West Ham supporters mixed in with City supporters! We got out quickly at the end only to meet 2-300 West Ham "fans" in the street outside. I''ve never run so fast in my life.

-Getting promotion in 1972 when we guaranteed promotion, again at Orient via a Grahem Paddon penalty. Getting a piece of the penalty spot in a nearby pub!!

So many more memories so thanks to all from a lifetime supporter.

Tony

We had Peter Mendham buddy. But out of those select few we have only found three Norwich born to play for City in the top flight.

Charging down the pitch at  Watford in 1972 before kick off, to take over the covered end where the Watford supporters were, ''cos it was p*ssing down and we''d been put on the open terrace!  We were then able to celebrate Stringer''s goal in front of us properly!

Thanks Nutty and City1st for the pictures.  I was just behind and to the left of the goal on that momentous day.Yes I do remember the balloons and the vain attempt to stop them!I also remember while we were being shepherded from the station to the ground, hardly being allowed to look left or right, seeing two yellow and green clad guys, come flying backwards down the front steps of a pub which they had obviously mistakenly chosen to enter.  A growl went up from the passing thousands, much to the concern of the escorting constabulary, but they got up and to a cheer from the assembly joined the procession to the ground (I think)!

Has anyone mentioned airhorns? I think the heyday for these was late seventies / early eighties. Made a hell of a noise but didn''t last long before they packed up. Some of the Barclay Boys I remember from the time were Stanley, Bernie, Hippo and Basher. I also recall the smell of onions that went with the (Westlers??) hot dogs. I''m not sure if the little silver wagons that served these tasty treats were inside or outside the ground?

Fairly certain they were outsideBog rolls used to get thrown onto the pitch, usually after we scoredAcquired some when visiting a local airbase so as to throw them on the pitch, but wasn''t aware what you did so just threw it. It hit some poor far ker down near the front of the Barclay. Three goes and all failed to achieve that long trail across the back of the goal.I''m also fairly certain some skinflint picked them up - times were hardBut not as hard as that stuff ............................. you might just as well used cellophane wrappingwe''ve got kenny kenny kenny foggo on the wing, on the wingkenny ...... kenny foggokenny foggo on the wing

hard thing is to work out what tune those songs/chants were toI can still easily remember them but trying to place them is the problemas it might help to have something that is NOT a variant of Sloop John B
