Canaries Utd 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Currently stands at 49% of the votes for Russell Martin. Just a question for those Martin supporters, do you really see him being a regular player on the pitch next season? I was surprised when i voted for Bassong and found he was a long way behind in the poll, but in my opinion, there is no better candidate for a team captain.I do believe however that Martin would be a good club captain. ZLF 274 Posted August 6, 2013 I see only three viable options, seb, martin and ruddy.Martin has taken the captains arm band under hughton who has also repeatedly picked him ahead of whittaker so I would be happy with that.Seb is a natural leader and already orders a lot but my personal preference in Ruddy. flying high up in the sky! 1 Posted August 6, 2013 I think he will be one of the first players on the team sheet. It''s between him an Whittaker as it was last season when he was first choice. Him or Bassong for me.
Tumbleweed 106 Posted August 6, 2013 When I looked at that list Martin was the first and most obvious candidate to me. But I had exactly the same thought so I plumped for Bassong. As Zip says Ruddy was probably the only other viable option but I am never sure about goalkeeper captains. I too was surprised how far behind he was.
lincoln canary (& Golden Coppel) 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Leroy Fer.
lincoln canary (& Golden Coppel) 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Off topic but I see Oldham have made Korey Smith captain at just 22. Fair play to the lad, seems to be very highly thought of.

nutty nigel 7,531 Posted August 6, 2013
Leroy Fer.
I know very little about the new players but I would think the chances are it will be one of them or Bassong as the club moves on at a rate of knots.
paul moy 235 Posted August 6, 2013 I voted for Bassong as he is a regular and comes across as an imposing figure and fighter for the cause. The only drawbacks could be language limitations as he is French/Cameroon and injury absence. Martin is ok but not a long-term regular enough fixture IMO. Bassong Captain and Martin Vice-Captain please !!!!!
smooth 114 Posted August 6, 2013 I do think bassong would be the ideal captain with Russell Martin as club captain. We bought a number of former captains from clubs for leadership, in time I think Howson could if his development continues but for organisation, leader, communication bassong is ahead of Martin.Interesting comment about fer too, I do like a midfielder as captain but bassong last year was our talisman, he was and is the influential man on the field for organisation and communication. I think he also proved it by leading by example. There were a lot of goals conceded down from our right back position.
chicken 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Actually I think there are a lot of good candidates who have all been captains before too.Snodgrass, Hoolahan are two others.Who knows. I think Martin is more highly rated by our coaches than a lot of the people that post on here who seem to think Whittaker is the better player.
Fiery Zac 1,066 Posted August 6, 2013 Ruddy for me. Unbelievably important to the squad and fantastic that we (look like we have) kept hold of him. I like a captain to be able to see the whole of play in front of them so if not Ruddy then Bassong, but in terms of being a regular starter, importance to the team and handling a dressing room (if that''s what a captain has anything to do with these days...) of new and longer serving players I think Ruddys ideal. Ray 111 Posted August 6, 2013 Russ Martin has played at CB most of the pre-season, which is where he is currently playing internationally and he has been captain throughout. Also during the pre-season a number of players have occupied right back, Whits, Adel Gafaiti (a CB for the Dev Squad) Elliott Bennet and Ewan McNeil (Dev Squad RB), so it would seem to me that there is a strong possibility that RM will be playing CB as Captain. It will be interesting to see the set up tonight and Saturday, which will no doubt throw more light on the subject.
Nicko 0 Posted August 6, 2013 I voted for Howson. Can''t see any others being vocal enough for the captaincy apart from Russ.

[:D]I personally don''t think goalkeepers make good captains as IMO a captain needs to be all over the pitch to communicate with teammates, and goalkeepers have an extemely specialist job that requires the most concentration and this should not be disrupted. chicken 0 Posted August 6, 2013 @Ray: That makes sense actually. I can remember a few centre backs that were played at full back early on in their careers to bring them into the game a little more easily. Is it perhaps an indicator of us giving up on Toby I wonder.Martin, R.Bennett, Bassong, Turner as the four CB''s with cover from Whittaker if needed?
GJP 79 Posted August 6, 2013 At this stage it looks like it''ll be a surprise if it isn''t Martin. I think Turner might have a shot. Being Players'' Player of the Season clearly shows he is very well thought on at least a professional level (and probably personal too).
Yobocop 1,098 Posted August 6, 2013 Yeah Turner gets my vote, which kind of poo poos all of you who don''t think he should be in the team for some strange reason!
Ray 111 Posted August 6, 2013 Chicken,Perhaps not giving up on Toby, but possibly selling or loaning out a CB if he comes? If that is the case my money would be on Michael Turner, not because of his ability but because he is closing in on thirty, not old for a modern player I know but the oldest CB we have, this would leave our four CB''s as Bassong, 27, Martin, 27, Alderweireld, 24 and Bennett, 23, with Ayala if he stays at 22 plus others such as Gafaiti, 19, coming through the ranks. I think perm any two from the four and we would have a sound CB pairing, plus of course we have cover for Whits if injured in Russ Martin, or even Elliott Bennett, who having seen him play at RB a couple of time, is more than capable. Yelloow Since 72 54 Posted August 6, 2013 The number of candidates shows how strong the squad is on leadership. I went for Martin because of his longer commitment to City, though Turner being ''players player of the year'' is a good shout as well. There also seems a logic to Snodgrass as a virtual everpresent starter last season. Happy with any of them, TBH.
can u sit down please 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Martin. Still one of the first names on the team sheet for me. I''ll say that he will excel with Scotland at CB and will partner Bassong. My second choice. My third choice would be Snoddy. At the heart of all things that''s good with City, on and off the pitch. He did a good job at Leeds and is very vocal. Ruddy....keepers do make good captains but my pref would be an outfield player.
Tetteys Jig 830 Posted August 6, 2013 Martin isn''t tall enough to pair with Bassong as our Centre Backs. Turner is ideal foil for the more mobile Bassong.
NWC 239 Posted August 6, 2013 I would have said Seb, but i''m afraid that whole "look at me gangstaaa wiv me shooter" pose has really put me off him as a NCFC captain.Call me an old fart if you must :)
can u sit down please 0 Posted August 6, 2013 Wouldn''t say Martin is too small. How many big men do CBs in the prem come up against? With the exception of Carroll I can''t think of too many.Centre half is def his best position. I''ve never seen him struggle in the air when playing there. Ray 111 Posted August 13, 2013 Just seen this quote from Chris Hughton, can someone explain why Russ was not named Captain and Seb Vice Captain?"In some games, even with Seb playing, Russ will take the armband"

Ray 111 Posted August 13, 2013 Here''s the full quote. a lot of words which mean what?? I go back to Russ as Captain and Seb as Vice Captain “I thought about it long and hard,” said Hughton. “What we have in Russell is someone who has been here at this club for a long time and knowing the sort of character he is I am sure from day one he has performed not just on the pitch but around the club, around the young players and he is a great point for communication for myself and other staff members. “What he has done is perform the role of captain on numerous occasions as well so what I wanted alongside that was Seb involved in some way. Where we are as a club at this moment I also want to be mindful of players who have performed well. There have been some changes and new faces this summer and I was delighted with Seb’s contribution last season and I wanted him involved. In some games, even with Seb playing, Russ will take the armband and that is a reflection of what it means to the club.”
