norfolkbroadslim 225 Posted August 21, 2013 The first picture I posted - - Yes it''s between the wars (just) - another clue there - Yes, it''s at the nest - No, it''s not any of the names mentioned - Look again at what he''s wearing. What''s that around his neck? The second picture I posted - - no guesses so far - someone must be able to have a stab at the year from looking at the stadium, surely? [/quote] nbs, re your first pic, he does look remarkably like Russell Colman, of whom there is a picture in Canary Citizens opening Carrow Road. If he isn''t him then it presumably is the lord mayor of Norwich, with his chain of office, or the High Sheriff.
norfolkbroadslim 225 Posted August 21, 2013 Yes it''s the Lord Mayor, George Green. Here is the exerpt from flickr - "Norwich City Football club played at the Nest from 1908 until 1935. The Nest was situated at ''Ruymp''s Hole'', a disused chalk-pit in Rosary Road. Unsurprisingly football was suspended from 1915-1919 because of the Great War, but for Norwich City the period was still turbulent despite the lack of on the pitch action. The Club''s debts were increasing and on December 10th 1917 it went into voluntary liquidation. The Nest was locked and the Club''s affairs put on ice.On November 6th 1918 the Club was formally wound up, but on February 15th 1919, Norwich City Football Club were re-formed. The Lord Mayor (George Green) kicks off.from a private album - kindly lent" We actually ceased to exist for a short while, which I''m sure you all knew anyway. Syteanric 1 Posted August 21, 2013 if we ceased to exist for a time then wouldn''t our records be for 2 separate teams, and wouldn''t our founding now officially be 1919?
Bill 1,788 Posted August 21, 2013 Certainly not separate teams, clubs maybebut I would suggest the intention was always to reform and those involved simply started up again, so it was pretty much the same club

Tangible Fixed Assets anyone? 0 Posted August 21, 2013 Oops just spotted the rebuilt City Stand, so its got to be between 1986ish - 1990ish
Bill 1,788 Posted August 21, 2013 err check my post above for year, month game etc
norfolkbroadslim 225 Posted August 21, 2013 A few have worked this out now for the second pic. It was indeed the 14th February 1987 and the official opening of the City Stand (the stand had already been in use for a months). The baloons ready to be released can be seen covered over bottom left. The Duchess of Kent was the who as she was the one who officially opened the stand. The game was against Man City and ended 1-1. The ground has changed a fair bit since then. http://www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/content/articles/2005/03/30/fev_dorris_thorpe_feature.shtml If we actually went out of business did our official name change, even if just slightly? Just thinking along the lines of Rangers having to change their name?[:^)]
Bill 1,788 Posted August 21, 2013 No change of name, though they were a professional club I don''t think it had the same financial commitments and obligations as Rangers. My understanding is that the same directors simply reformed the club.It should be borne in mind that football leagues and the FA cup had also been suspended yet returned after the war. I think that City were pretty much part of that rather than any maladministration etc.A curious footnote - this thread started as a quiz about a photo from 1981. The trophy being presented was player of the year (Barry Butler) Trophy. Barry Butler signed for us on this day in 1957, and he was a cracking player by all accounts hence the post and the link. Though the thread has rather got sidetracked since, still hey ho.
