Who makes way for Fer?

You would surprise how much statistic is used when signing a player. .

And really if you take anti-Hoolahan classes off your eyes
Nope. It''d be no surprise to me.

Hoolahan is one of my favourite Norwich players ever. I''ve spent years telling people how good he is.

What about Snodgrass for goals? He had more chances than Holty last season. In the formation we played last season (and look like playing this season) the striker and two wingers pushing inside are the main source of goals.

We can''t expect much from the DMs as they are not given license to push forward often. Wes should probably score more but doesn''t get many chances.

I would love to see goals from Snoddy, but as with Hoolahan the finishing seems to be problem. In my opinion he should score more often as he has license to push far as he wants.

and what comes to our DM''s and goals Johnson shooted outside of the box about 10 times previous season, Tettey did same and Howson scored few. Fer is quite much improved version of them all what comes to going forward and something we need is player that can roam from behind when passing forward isn''t option. A bit like Lampard does for Chelsea, but slightly more defensive player. He can easily score 5 goals in open play during the season if we get our tactics right.
Stats are not everything, but for me those stats just proves what I saw saturday and which was that our holding players had a bad day and Hoolahan had to play too much out of real position to be effective as he can be and we lost the battle in middlefield and you really cant prove anything else as stats almost every area show that Howson was very poor and other two were average. I would say that Johnson was poor too, but if you take count of his role and his passing ratings before Everton match, he had average day in his standards. God damn if he could pass the ball like Fox...
An old quote about statstics and lamp-posts comes to mind. And I like stats, I use them all the time on the blog - with some context. But seeing as you like stats so much, lets look at the midfielders yesterday. Howson and Johnson: same number of interceptions and tackles. Howson: more clearances, all of which found teammates. Howson: less fouls.

This is the player, remember, who isn''t the more specialist defensive midfielder of the two. And the player who spent the last 20 minutes playing in an advanced role. So I''m a touch confused as how Howson, with better stats than Johnson, is considered the ''very poor'' one in midfield, so it got me thinking: maybe he''s talking about pass completion.

So I had a look at that, and you can get the chalkboards from Statszone. And here''s the thing: with the exception of one pass, every incomplete pass from Howson was into the final third of the pitch. They were passes from trying to create chances, trying to play in Bennett down the right or RVW off the last defender. Otherwise, all of his passes were safe and completed. As for Bradley, he did indeed complete more, but in the first two thirds of the pitch. He played 9 and 18 passes into the defensive and middle thirds of the pitch, compared to 2 and 9 for Howson. I would expect him to complete these, because they''re the safe option. He was looking to find a yellow shirt and take the safe pass, often to a fullback. Howson also completed these - he just did less of them, because he was looking for attacking options. I''m not going to criticise a midfielder for looking to build attacks, and if he was losing the ball, he wasn''t doing it in a threatening area.

This is aside from the fact that, within minutes of Howson moving to an attacking midfield position, we created 3 chances, 2 of which he was central to, as I went into detail in on the blog.

Kind Regards.

Holtamania I stated in other thread that even thought Howson was very poor building up our attacks he did do better job defense wise that he did previous season after Tettey injured.

And I dont love statistics. I just check them over after a game to see if my eyes saw everything right.

Howson didnt create chances by himself. He didnt get the ball in good crossing positions. He didnt get our unit moved forward. He didnt create space for other players. Still he is playing in a role where this is his duty. Johnson didnt make big errors in defence and even thought he wasnt at his best he didnt "fail" in his role. This is reason why I think Howson was very poor saturday where Hoolahan and Johnson were average.

I dont want to slack Howson, he wasnt utterly bad and I dont say he shouldnt ever play again for our shirt, but he was worst of starting trio in the middle. Even when Tettey came to bring energy he didnt do anything in that advanced role, dont know if it was asked from Hughton to not play in the pocket, but he was all the time in wrong position if he was supposed to link RvW with rest of the team. He even made us miss create counter attack 3 vs 3 by making poor choise. (thought the support of Tettey and Johnson wasnt probably the optimal combination anyway)

The pinkun struggles to have seen a more patently incorrect view since ZLF said Kei was better than Holt. Good work.

Yes yes yes, everyone''s entitled to an opinion and so on and so forth.

Basically Howson is not a defensive midfielder and struggles in the role. When given the opportunity to play his natural game he can look quite decent.

No need to go personal and I could say same about your opinion and at the moment with our stats of first game my opinion has more ground under itself ^^

At the end both are opinions, but even by scrolling few most popular football pages (goal, espn and whoscored) you see that Howson and Johnson are rated there equally good and Hoolahan bit over them. Not that I even believe their journos would have watched our game, but I have and I can agree with stats those ratings are based.

So if you think my opinion is so wrong, good luck proving it by debate. One liners doesnt really give anything fo this forum.

If you have hard time for some reason understand what I''m saying because of my poor english say so and I can draw you a pictures where and what went wrong with Howson''s game and how it did affect for rest of the team.

Exactly.

We need that attacking midfielder ASAP, who has that place alongside fer, with elmander behind rvw.

We need that player before next Saturday. We need to get our team ready for the season.

that was years ago, not today.. Wes has show in the last 2 games he shouldnt even be on the bench Vs Southampton.. he is one of many that now needs to stand up and be counted.

If Wes shouldn''t be on the bench then neither should Howson, Johnson or Tettey who are all inept and have started twice.

bringing wes on to play left wing was not the brightest idea though - I thought the only tactical mistake from the three subs.

Who made way for Fer ? - it was Hoolahan

Why ? - Because he (Fer) has in his game - guile, muscle & goals.

Did we smash Hull ? - No

Why ? - Because Fer has muscle, but no guile, no goals & cannot link the play or penetrate the defence.

So why play him ? - cos he''s got a profile, we paid a lot of money for him & he chose us ahead of other clubs?

Who should we play in the "hole" next game ? - Hoolahan !

Why Hoolahan ? - because we actually need to get points from these games !

and he has the guile, can link the play & will penetrate the defence.

Redmond should never have come off. But Hughton made the error of bringing Elmander on as the 2nd sub, realised the error during play and had to bring on Hoolahan - someone had to come off - it was Redmond.

Hoolahan did not stay on the wing - he was roving across the park.
