What makes a City legend

Recommended Posts

I think everyone one would agree hucks and holt will go down as city legends bothers leave and are stained forever eg jump ship to villa. Some can be legends but have their shine tarnished eg gunny.

So what is it that makes us continue to hero worship some players/managers after they leave but hate others?

How about someone, who comes into a Club, when they are on their knees, almost going out of business. Then turns them round within 4 years to be an established (hopefully!) Prem club with no external debts and is able to get some of Europe''s top young talent for bargain fees? (Not saying it was ALL down to him, but you know what I mean)

Does it only have to be Players and Managers that become ''Legends''?
So what is it that makes us continue to hero worship some players/managers after they leave but hate others?
Generally,  the ones we love are those that bare their soul and make us feel we can relate to them.   Hucks stood out not just as a footballer, as he showed he loved the club, fans and Norfolk and he had apparently fought his agent to stay with us.  Gunny will forever be a true legend, regardless of his time as manager as he bared his soul and heart, playing on despite illness in his family.  Not only a great goalkeeper but a great man.   Holty is just a legend because of the way he is - brilliant goal scorer and team player, wholehearted, family man, can laugh at himself, an inspirational captain.

The ones people hate?  Probably never connected with fans, or showed disdain or disrespect to the fans or the club.  Sometimes players and situations are misunderstood.  It would be great to think of Lambert as a legend, but to many of us he showed disrespect.   Even though we don''t know all the facts, he has been tainted.    A success,  but we never really got to know him as he never let his guard down - and he left under poor circumstances.

LDC agree with most of that....other than Paul Lambert.....he (reluctantly) just has to go down as a City legend for what he achieved...BUT he is certainly a tainted legend because he showed himself to have no class when leaving and also when returning, shame really.

Just a mention for Gunny, who despite making an absolute pigs ear out of being our Manager (other than signing Holt), can hold his head very high for his contribution before he was Manager........time has probably watered down what he achieved for us and how he handled his family tragedy... a great man who just made a career choice mistake.
