It''s Character Forming:

The best archers in the country at the time came from the Welsh marshes. They were constantly skirmishing with the Welsh and gained a lot of experience at operating the longbow in a practical way. Although, every English man aged 12-60 was required to practice with a bow equal to their height, so just about every English land-owner was expected to have a degree of prowess with the bow. The Welsh were also highly regarded as archers. Some speculate that the reason the English adopted the longbow was in response to the heavy losses caused by the Welsh archers during an English invasion.

S**t, I just realised this was a football forum. Umm.... Football was once banned in this country as it stopped men from practicing their archery. Is this on topic enough now? [:$]

2 fingers as an insult is British and British only..

comes from the battle of Agincourt, where the French said they would take 2 fingers from the British archers as keepsakes after winning the battle, as they fled from the battle field some time later the Archers showed 2 fingers as a pee take.

in any other country its not considered an insult.
Bit OT, but I''m afraid to tell you there isn''t much factual evidence this is true. It''s more of a myth which was passed down the generations
factual or not. Here in the states its a british thing and only the middle finger is deemed inappropriate. So he''s right!
