Sunderland having the same problems as us attracting some targets.

Europa league over mid table football apparently. I wonder how many of our targets will slip through the net in similar circumstance.

Other than their massive stadium, Sunderland are of a similar level to us.

There are quite a few Clubs in our position. You just have to look at how many transfers fail because of various reasons to see that it''s not an easy business attracting good players.

And the problem will continue while players can wait and then join a ''better'' club.

It is not helped by a ridiculous system that requires Premiership clubs to name a match squad of 25 while they can hold the registrations of 40, 50 or 60 players.

If they can''t play them it doesn''t matter .......... because nobody else can play them while they are registered to the top clubs.

Perhaps the system needs change where the number raises to 30 players over 21 but no other registrations to be held. If a club wanted to transfer somebody in they would have to move somebody out first. There would then be a better spread of players across the Premiership, making for better competition.

That theory would make more sense if any of the big clubs had over 25 players in their squads - they don''t.

What is happening is this pre/close season, more than any other, is confused by the extra money. Clubs really aren''t sure what calibre of player they have a chance of attracting, and agents are really sure what size of club is realistic for the clients anymore.

The balance of money in European football is massively skewed towards the Premier League at the moment, with clubs like Norwich having more financial clout that every team in Holland, all but 2 teams in France, all but 3 clubs in Spain and all but 2 or 3 clubs in Italy and Germany. Players are starting to question the benefits of playing in the Champions League when they can double their salary by playing mid-table in England.

Also, the season before a World Cup always causes uncertainty amoungst players - it famously caused Micheal Owen to swap Real Madrid for Newcastle and I''m sure there are players on the fringes of their current national team who feel regular first team football in the Premier League will help them cement a place in next years World Cup.

At the moment Norwich, Southampton and Sunderland (to an extent) are being hugely ambitious in their targets and it is envitable that some will say no - Alderwiereld is a prime example - Ajax captain in a very good squad and has good chance of progressing to the knock-out stages of the Champions League again this season. Why give that up for a move to Norwich that he really doesn''t have to make?

To the OP, we must bear in mind that Oczipka is a German player for Eintracht Frankfurt, and the German Bundesliga is arguably on par with the EPL. From that perspective he seems justified to see Sunderland as a sideways move at best professionally. Targets coming from smaller leagues imho are more likely to reason differently, and see the EPL plus a bigger paycheck as an unquestionable upward move.
