International 3 days before season starts....

Recommended Posts

If this has been posted before, apologies - but is it acceptable to have an international friendly 3 days before the season starts? We have players involved, and could you imagine Snodders or Martin getting injured?

Whilst yes it is silly, every other club with International players is in the same boat.
If you think about it, this is one of the costs of being successful. We sign better players who by their nature are more likely to be international players too.

[/quote]Pretty much this. Just shows how successful we are becomingSir Alex used to moan about this all the time. It''s a main reason why England are so terrible at Internationals.Players / Managers care a lot more about the Prem than they do the country.

The thing about International games is, they involved teams from different countries, and different countries have different starting times for their Leagues.

So it is 3 days before the start of the League in England, but not in many other countries - and whilst the FA and Premier League would love for world football to focus around them, that just isn''t possible.

I take the point about us being where we are and, as such have players that are involved in internationals - which is great for us, but why, as the OP might be alluding to is why an international game is scheduled for a few days before the start of the season.

Pretty much every international team in Europe, and elsewhere, has got a friendly scheduled for that day. The reason is to help teams build up to the crucial World Cup qualifying matches on September 6/7 and 10/11.

This has nothing to do with Fifa. These are not Fifa fixtures. These matches have been arranged by the various international sides because their managers want to assess their players before the next round of WC qualifying games.

To emphasise this, Sweden are playing Norway and The Netherlands are playing Portugal. So Olsson, Fer and van Wolfswinkel may be involved (not to mention any we may sign in the meantime). In all there are 36 international friendlies on August 14. So 72 countries playing. This is not some Fifa plot against the Premier League, and if Norwich City players are in danger of getting injured that almost certainly applies to every other club in the Premier League, some of whom will have many more players at risk than us.

Does anyone actually have any stats on how many players get injured on International duty?

It seems like, if you pay attention to football fans, players only get injured in Cup games against rubbish sides, or on International duty (especially pointless international friendlies...).

I''m sure all our 7/8 Internationals will get seriously injured, while every other PL international will be fine, in fact they''ll only play a max of 45 mins so they are fresh enough for the game on the following Saturday.

GP - I think you will find that the number of injuries increases the most just before international friendlies rather than in internationals; as club manager persuade a player they need a rest to keep their place...

I was going to say that Zipper, there aren''t more injuries playing internationals, there are more injuries to avoid internationals. Because clubs don''t care, they make the players don''t care. And that attitude appears to have effected England more than anywhere else.

Its stupid. Players/their clubs don''t want to risk ''pointless'' games, they don''t get the experience playing with each other, they don''t improve. I remember reading an article about how desperate Argentina were to call Aguero up even though he''d have only been fit enough to maybe play half an hour, just so he had the training time with his fellow countrymen.
