Interesting dilema for one of our Premiership rivals......

Recommended Posts

Cisse has apparently objected to wearing a shirt with the new sponsor''s name for Newcastle. He''s a practising Muslim, and objects to pay-day company Wonga. Tiote and Ben Arfur are also practising Muslims, but haven''t as yet stated whether they agree with his protest.

Do Newcastle

a) find a new sponsor,

b) upset the sponsor by allowing Cisse to wear an unbranded shirt, or

c) put him (and possibly the other two) up for sale?

Answers on a postcard, please, to St James'' Park, Necastle.

I would bet they just let him wear an unbranded shirt.Certainly opens an interesting debate about ethics, though I fail to understand specifically why payday loans are offensive to the muslim faith.

The charging of interest is against Sharia law

Personally I find any company that charges over 50% APR offensive especially ones charging 1000%, 2000%, 3000% or more

Not seen anything other than the individual does not want to wear it on ethical grounds.

Don''t blame him. Have you seen their rates of interest? The fact that they appeal specifically to the most vulnerable people in society, economically at least, and then sting them in the process.

Muslims are not allowed to earn interest on any money therefore these payday loans with huge interest rates are haram (as is any financial interest earned).

I suppose playing in the Barclay''s Premier League can be overlooked though.

The reason the APR looks stupidly high is that it is based on a small amount of money borrowed over a few days.

If the interest rate was applied over multiple years it would drop massively.

E.G. Mortgage APR''s are so low because you are borrowing huge sums over 25 yrs, the more you borrow and longer the term , the lower the APR becomes without altering the flat rate of interest . Hope this helps. :)

Christians oppose pay-day loans as well on ethical grounds.

I think it has more to do with taking advantage of the disenfranchised than anything specific concerning Sharia Law or teachings within the Bible against interest/loans/usury.

Good on him!

No, APR means Annual Percentage Rate, so it doesn''t matter how many years you borrow it over, it''s what you pay each year,, that is 1000 per cent, etc.

Will Newcastle do the same as Bolton and drop the pay day loan sponsor?

I think they will

These companies have been cynically setup to exploit the poorest in society, what ever their slick marketing will say.

These companies are loan sharks with suits and web sites.

Bolton fans objected, Cisse is objecting....good on them I say.

We don''t need sharks like these in the PL waters...good on Cisse. Wish we had more like him to be active against Aviva.

Ignore him, Ketts, He''s a troll.

hopefully all works out for cisse. although with it being a payday loan company it will be interesting to see how they handle it, too. the club signed a contract with them, so one side will have to make way. will a company like wonga be the ones who will be doing to do that? I''m not so sure.

Very noble.

I wonder what his stance would be if the sponsor was "Help For Heroes".

I hope their move into football sponsorship will prove to be a costly mistake. The objections from Bolton fans and Cisse, together with some decent news coverage could be quite damaging.

I can see these misery mongers being outlawed or heavily regulated in the future.

Militant Canary wrote - "...I think it has more to do with taking advantage of the disenfranchised than anything specific concerning Sharia Law..."

Well you think wrongly then. It is stated quite clearly in the reports why he is refusing to wear the shirt. Muslims are a lot more adherent to their religious rules than the majority of self-professed Christians.

I feel sick that he is a practitioner of shai''ra law, this is the same system that tortures millions of women around the world.

And yes, I''m an ''atheist bastard''.

Fair enough, those payday loan companies are ethically questionable but Cisse signed a contract at the club and partaking in elements of sponsorship probably forms part of it. He''s happy to take his salary, the majority is indirectly paid by Rupert Murdoch. I find it baffling that in these times anyone anywhere gives any credence to religion.

if anyone wants to practice sharia law, they''re welcome to ... in a sharia state. That certainly has no place in our society!

Actually I think I will post it.

That is a massive stereotype of people and wrong when you bear in mind that a) not every muslim is a terrorist (probably get some argument on that by some people on here..) and b) when you consider that there are muslims in the British army.

How would people react  if I stereotyped all white English people as "EDL supporting racist thugs?".
