Why would players want to come to Norwich?

Recommended Posts

If you were a player from France or Portugal, or anywhere in the world and you had offers from the premiership, why would you choose Norwich?  You wouldn''t be earning as much as at other premiership clubs.  So what kind of players would come here?  I''m not talking about players who would see it as their big chance to play in the premiership,  but players who have the choice over which club they go to.  Why would they choose us over West Ham, or Newcastle etc.    Imo, if a player chooses us over another premiership club its a very positive action from our point of view.  It means they are not content to be in some big club reserve team or be loaned out and it means they are not just seduced by big money.   So an RVW or any other big name player we might get presumably would come  here for the right reasons - footballing reasons.     When Johnny Howson was signed I thought there''s a player who''s coming here for the right reasons.  He could have gone to another premiership club, but chose us.   It has been a surprise he hasn''t done as well as we thought he might - but he looks to have found his confidence now.  But with foreign players, it is slightly different.   Norwich will not be a club they maybe know that much about, but we are an increasingly prominent side and although we can''t offer the huge wages of other clubs, what do we offer that might attract those players and get them to come here?   Is it down to the manager, the facilities - or is that we will just have to pay the bigger wages to get the better players?

If you are talking about established stars, then why would they come  to Norwich when they could earn massively higher wages with one of the big clubs, plus a big signing-on fee? More regular TV coverage seems also to favour the big clubs and their well known players.

Why would others come to Norwich? Not yet established but are ready for the challenge, use us a stepping stone, want to be sure of a regular game rather than warming the bench and getting a few minutes on the pitch if they are lucky, etc.? Probably also reputation of club/manager on the grapevine, ambition of the club.

I remember Worthington saying once that the way to get a player to sign for us was to get him to come here and take a look round. If deals were negotiated over the phone they generally wouldn''t sign, if they came and took a look at the clubs facilities, the city and surrounding areas it made things a lot easier.

The airport, not a lot of clubs have one of those nearby, and coupled with the university anyone wanting to grow peppercorns whilst commuting from the showground will find the club well placed to do all that.Peppercorns grow best on a west facing balcony.

It depends.  I just think that sometimes, a player will recognise that there are other things more important than money.  Those are the players we want.  The ones that want to be here because they like the ethos of the club, like the manager etc.   That''s why I would advocate not bringing any players in on massive wages.  If we have to pay massive wages to get this player or that, we would be going down a road that QPR are on - getting players that are in it just for the money.    We''ve had Huckerby here - why - because he recognised what a great club it is and loved the lifestyle and area.

Pay them well, but imo, the club is a stand out model of what a football club should be.  Well run, on the up, living within its means and not having sold out to some rich foreigner.   Any player recognising this - and liking what he sees of the area - would be the kind we want.   Few and far between, but nevertheless, better to get fewer players and make sure they are here for the right reasons, than to splash too much cash for what may not prove to be value for money.

The answer to your question is "players who would see it as their big chance to play in the premiership".  But you don''t want to talk about those, for some reason.  So.....a) over the hill players looking for one last payday before they retire (Helveg)b) Dutch and Belgian players who like flat landscapes as it reminds them of home.c) Closet Neo-Nazis who cherish the predominantly white Anglo-Saxon nature of Norfolk''s population.d) French players who like the local accent and enjoy Allo Allo impressions.e) Players from Luxembourg who wanted to move somewhere smaller.

[/quote]The players I am talking about would be ones that would be getting the chance to play in the premiership anyway, because other premiership clubs would want them too.  We can''t offer the same wages as those clubs so we have to have something else to offer them, whether its the stability of the club or the facilities, or the way it is run.    If we could find top quality players that  choose to come to Norwich and inevitably get paid less than they would have at other clubs, at least it would mean we know they chose us for the right reasons - whether that be footballing reasons, the wife likes the area, or a mixture of things.      Bassong comes to mind.  A terrific player who came here because of Hughton.  Could have maybe gone anywhere or stayed where he was, but he chose to come to Norwich.   I don''t know what RVW will be paid, but it will be less than he would have got than if he had signed for say - Sunderland.     I''d like to know what persuaded him to accept Norwich - as there were other clubs sniffing round him where (I presume) he could have got more money.    Proximity to home could be a factor in attracting Dutch players, so maybe more will follow.   We don''t need lots of players, just ones of the right pedigree who come here because they like the club and are not just in it for the money.

For Dutch/Belgian players geographical proximity might be a factor, while players with international aspirations (such as Marko Marin or Toivonen) at the end of the day regular first team football could be more important than money.

Somewhat ironic that we also have the highest proportion of Atheists in the country, isn''t it?
