Cantley 0 Posted February 9, 2004 I''m basically an optimist, but I really believe that if we''re lucky enough to go up it''ll take a miracle to stay up. Even if we spent all the extra income on players. I for one would be perfectly content if the Premiership money was treated as a windfall, and invested in improving the ground (for example an infill between South Stand and River End, and replacing the ageing pitch/drainage/heating system. We should also be looking to put the club on a more solid and sustainable financial footing. By all means give the squad massive bonuses if they were to keep us up, but otherwise we should run a very very tight ship. The most we should aspire to at the moment is to join (or rejoin) that group of clubs which shuttles between first division and premiership. DumbleDelia is Magic 0 Posted February 9, 2004 This thread should be called WHEN we go up, fool on the hill. I have to say i disagree with most of your points. Yes I think it''ll be hard to stay up but not impossible. If worthy is given say £5million there is a very good chance we could stay up. Team spirit is hugely important and if we have that plus some quality editions there is every chance we could stay up. I would much rather have a good go at staying up than spend it on the ground. I''m very confident that when we go up we will build the infill between south stand and river end. Worthy should have some cash to spend on top of that. I''m not saying lets go nuts and do an Ipswich and gamble everything on staying in the Premiership but I don''t think we should settle for being a club who is in the Prem one year and then trying to win the first division the next
Archie 0 Posted February 9, 2004 fool on the hill i agree with you - our financial future is far more important than having an all or nothing go at staying up. we should probably follow the example of birmingham - they bought very few players at the beginning of the season, but when they saw they had a very realistic chance of staying up at christmas they went for it(in a sensible way, too) - much like we did this season with huckerbypast seasons have shown that those who keep their original tema as the core do well, ie ipswich in their first season.id be much happier to go down with a secure club in all areas that can cater for its fans in terms of attendance, and then have a really good chance of going up the next season - like wba
NMTD 0 Posted February 9, 2004 Archie - spot on...Firstly though - let''s make sure we get there.I think the TV revenues for finishing bottom are in the region of £17m and with a parachute payment of around £5m (does anybody have more accurate figures on this?) so I think we should be OK and be able to do a ''bit of everything''I reckon it will be a nigh on certainty that if we go up that the South Stand/River End infil will be built - and built quick to give us an extra 1800 or so seats. No idea what it will cost but lets say £2m at the outside. It also sounds like we''re up for a new pitch £650,000 - and players wages will no doubtedly rise quite considerably.Reducing our debt will also be a priority for the board. But to my reckoning this will still give us room to manouver in the transfer market whilst also squirrelling some cash away should we come straight back down.Of course we would have a chance of staying up, but if we don''t - and history would indicate that not many do - we need to make sure that finances are secure enough to make sure that we could yo-yo back again in the following year. The club have openly said they are modelling on Charlton - and I for one am happy with that at this stage. no1canary 0 Posted February 9, 2004 If we go up then then the corner infill should be on the first thing on the ''to do'' list. If the whole stand took only just over half a season and cost about £7 mil then the infill would be completed by the start of the season and wouldn''t cost much. Ideally we would love to stay up but if we don''t we will have another stepping stone to build on to get stronger for the next promotion push and go up with an even better chance of staying up. We can''t go over the top with spending, as long as they use it wisely to bring in quality then we might have a good chance. Has anyone seen on the BBC website that Eddie Gray has said that he''s not going to play Batty anymore. Could be a possible signing?!
