A note of caution...

Recommended Posts

Lots of comments about our increased revenue. Which is good news but...

...in truth every club is just going to be richer and the same players available. All that will really happen is even more inflated fees and even bigger wage demands. Three teams will still be relegated and the job will be about steady improvement.

Oh and some clubs will no doubt invest in their venues and facilities with the increased revenue so not all this influx of cash will push players prices up. I dare say it will level itself out as most teams in the prem won''t notice the difference once their bossess also take a cut ;)

Nail on head.  Everyone is getting roughly the same cash.  So everyone will strengthen and unless we buy more or incredibly well, then next season will be another slog.Every team from 6th down is just looking to stay at the big boys table and anyone thinking next season is going to be any different from this, regardless of the manager and his tactics, is deluded.

Definitely it will push up wages/transfer fees for local players so as Stig says, for value teams will have to look abroad even more.

Because all the prem teams are better off, in itself the money won''t improve our position relative to the other Prem teams.  And of course the money is skewed in favour of teams higher up and with more live matches.

It will make it tougher for the Champ teams coming up.

Plus teams with outside funding from their owners will find that they need more help from them to make a real impact against teams like us who rely on revenue.  A few years back if someone pumped in £15m-£20m it would make a noticeable difference but much less now.

Did anyone else see that the lawyer who won the original Bosman ruling is bringing a challenge against the Fair Play rules ?

I''m just glad we''ve got RVW signed. The main striker is always the most expensive position to fill. Luckily we won''t be stuck shelling out £20m on some average striker like Darren Bent if there is a bidding war. I think if we can spend the money well on our midfield department and one more physical (quick and powerful) option up front, we''ll be competitive.

I''m sure the board and management will be cautious, but there are several things going for us - new Academy status and better members in prospect, debt paid off, prospect of ground improvement, the success of hanging on to Premiership status (even if only just).

Shrewd buys is the key, whether that be abroad or spotting a British/Irish rough diamond.

Buying players young enough to have sell on value (if need be).

The board just isn''t going to spunk over the odds in transfers and wages.

Don''t forget we''ll also have another £10 million or so to spend as we will have paid off the debt to the banks.

I think this time round, with a decent player already in every position, we can afford to gamble a bit more, get some unproven gems from abroad. If it doesn''t work, we have capable replacements.
Luckily we won''t be stuck shelling out £20m on some average striker like Darren Bent if there is a bidding war.
That''s a shocking player to use for a comparison Jimmy. He may not be in Lambert''s graces at the minute, but he''s been a natural goalscorer for the last 7-8 years at least, and is probably one of the most consistent goalscorers in the league, outside of the superstars like RVP, Tevez, et al.Whilst his current form may not justify a mega bucks transfer fee like 20 mil as it has previously, he''s easily a 10 million pound striker even now, and is certainly NOT average...
