It''s just the safety mark I guess, the average usually falls below 40 points, so it''s a good marker as you probably won''t need that many anyway

Isn''t that the point though? Get to forty points and you have almost guaranteed survival? Thats why it was the aim.

Its a nice round number.

As a rough average its not bad give or take.

No one has ever said its an absolute 40 points, its a just an indicator.

 

If everyone had to add caveats to explain every sentence they spoke, it would be a boring world and a boring game to read about.

 

I''ll keep using 40 points as the guide as most people know what you mean when you say this, its a nice round number, it doesn''t really matter if the average in reality is 38 or 39 or whatever, its just a number.

Remember 1984/5 when we were relegated with 49 points from 42 games, which is equivalent to 44 points from a 38 game season.

40 is normally enough but you can''t always rely on it.

technically, 36 points would be enough as long as you had a better goal difference or had an equal goal difference and had scored more goals.
