Is our defence the strongest it's ever been?

Recommended Posts

In light of all the negativity with our rubbish goalscoring form at the moment, on the other side of the coin, i can''t remember our defence ever being this strong.

Down to our second choice keeper and arguably our second choice right back, our defence looks immense, with Johnson marshalling well in front.

Bassong and Turner look every bit top premiership defenders. Hopefully we can get that 1 or 2 wins needed sooner rather than later and then relax, see how high up we can finish again and spend the summer attracting some exciting attacking talent to add to the work rate.

Strongest in a long time for sure. Building the team from the back was sensible. Just need to add in the middle and top now
Despite the rest of the team being camped back in our own half with them for most of the game
It would actually be easier to defend if the ball were being held in the oppo half more.

Ever? We have had some great defences in our time. Mid-eighties through to mid nineties, we had some outstanding defenders - Bruce Watson Culverhouse Spearing Bowen Linigan Butterworth Polston Newsome, all top class players. The team that won promotion to Div one in 1972 had Butler Payne Forbes, who were decent too.

id say it is ,certainly at this level (special mention to Green,Edworthy,Fleming,Mackay,Drury in 2003/4) since probably the 1988/9 season - Gunn,Culverhouse,Bowen,Linighan,Butterworth.  ....Bassong would have to be a contender for one of our best central defenders since Bruce and Watson?

The players look very strong this year. Whittaker/Martin, Bassong, Turner and Garrido are all an improvement. And Tettey is an improvement on BJ.

We now play a cautious defensive game with far better standard of defensive players. Bizarrely the goals conceded is only one less than from the same number of games last season!
