Leeds helping Cromer

Recommended Posts

Never thought that Leeds would do something which would make them go up in my estimations, although they couldn''t have gone much lower.

It surprised me too but with Leeds lending their solicitors to Cromer FC they have a real chance to win the battle to stay in their home.

Hopefully Cromer will pass on the favour and help out the poor old paupers when Evans tries to turf them out of poorman road

The press story says it is all about trying to save Cromer Town from extinction.

They made themselves extinct about 20 years ago.

Overstrand were an Anglian Combination Premier League side but could not play any more on their pitch so they moved to MADRA in Knapton. Cromer Town were playing in Division Three.

After a few seasons MADRA had to move. Cromer Town withdrew from the Anglian Combination and MADRA moved to Cromer to play their Premier Division games on Cromer Town''s pitch. The following season they changed their name to Cromer United. A season or two later they changed their name to Cromer Town, thus reviving the name of the club on that pitch.

It was basically a way to get promotion from Division Three to the Premier Division in one season, changing the name of the club from Overstrand to MADRA to Cromer United to Cromer Town along the way. The old Cromer Town died many years ago.

The reason that NNDC want Cromer Town off the pitch is so that they can develop the land and, at the same time, provide new facilities that will provide a new home for Cromer Town and also provide pitches for youth teams in Cromer who have been looking for facilities and somewhere in the town to play for 30 years.

I am sure others will look at this in another light but it is not as clear cut as some might believe.

This is smart business all the way around. Our farm team, Leeds United, wants to ensure their future recruits to be acquired and then developed in Leeds, will then be highly motivated to move back to a Premiership environment in Norwich. It''s a win-win all around. Cromer FC keeps their ground, Leeds will develop promising Cromer youngsters into saleable professionals, Norwich will dip into their vaults of treasure and send funds to Leeds to keep them afloat. In return, Norwich City will be the club of choice for any talent that does come through the farm system, i.e. the farm of Cromer and the farm of Leeds. If the Countess Of Harewood has a way of knowing how things have developed in this century she''s likely turning over in her grave.

"The reason that NNDC want Cromer Town off the pitch is so that they can develop the land"

North Norfolk District Council do not own that land, so it is NONE of their business. Cromer is a private club, the land is privately owned. The land is now owned by Benjamin Cabbell-Manners, the great grandson of the person who left the lease in her will, it is HE not the COUNCIL who want Cromer OFF the land. Benjamin Cabbell-Manners, the LANDOWNER, just so happens to be a Conservative Councillor serving the Cromer ward of the Conservative controlled North Norfolk District Council. Of course there is absolutely no vested interest in North Norfolk District Council getting involved *sigh*.

"and, at the same time, provide new facilities that will provide a new home for Cromer Town and also provide pitches for youth teams in Cromer who have been looking for facilities and somewhere in the town to play for 30 years"

Cromer looked into the proposed new football pitch, outside of Cromer, and concluded that it was not financially feasible for them to survive as a club if moving to that proposed piece of land. So they really are fighting to save themselves from extinction. Oh and guess what? That land is NOT owned by the COUNCIL but by the same man Benjamin Cabbell-Manners. A serving councillor, of North Norfolk District Council.

As you say.... "it is not as clear as some (you) believe".
