Angry about Curtis Davies

Recommended Posts

I know a striker was probably the main priority and like most posters on here im a bit underwhelmed we didnt get one of our big targets although we now have options up front we didnt have before.

My main concern is we didnt get Davies, our defence is a joke in the absence of Bassong, Turner or Bennet are ok alongside him but a liability paired together, we seemed to be stuck at offering 2 million max or with Barnett as part ex, Birmingham wanted 4 million, surely couldnt we have met them in the middle, here`s 3 million thank you very much, a centre half with pace, only 27 and 5 league goals in a struggling side.

Im sorry it makes no sense to me to bank on Bassongs fitness for premiership safety for the sake of a million pounds? Birmingham are desperate for money and we tried to get a bargain, anyone notice Bassong struggle a little near the end against Spurs? I hope he plays tomorrow but have my doubts.

Well Mr McNally i hope the million or so we saved in the bank doesnt bite us on the bum, and no im not a moaner just concerned we may miss out next season, never has there been a more profitable year to stay up.

I agree another centre back would have been good. But I am certainly not sure about Davies, he plays in the division below and when Leon Barnett played for us in the division below he looked extremely good as has R.Bennett. Not only that but if he was that good dont you think seeing as £3m probably would have got him and with Hughton having worked directly with him would have been insistent about getting him in, as we didnt push the boat out it suggests to me that Hughton wasnt sure he was an improvement.

I gotta disagree yellowbeagle, if i remember rightly Hughton tried to get him last August and this window aswell makes me think he did think Davies was worth it, perhaps McNally decided our offer was enough?

Tho you are spot on about Barnett and Bennett in the championship, looked good but poor prem players

One thing i have always thought about McNally is he supports the manager 100%, if Hughton said we need this player (with the relative cost involved) I''m pretty sure he''d be here.

The Birmingham defence containing Curtis Davies and the highly-rated Butland have kept just three clean sheets this season - I would have expected many more considering the high price Birmingham put on the pair of them.

Bearing in my mind Birminghams financial difficulties the last two seasons and have not brought anyone in, i think thats an unfair reflection on their defence

We really need another Bassong. If Davies is just another at Barnett or Bennett level there''s no point paying too much for him.

Hughton knows him well, so would have known what to bid.

If we were looking to pick up Hooper for £5-6m, then £4m seems a bit of a stretch for a centre-half, albeit one that has scored a few goals this season.

Bassong is probably key to the rest of our season. If he remains fit for the majority of games, Norwich should have enough about them. Any sustained injury and we''ll be likely fighting a relegation battle.

Martin was terrific as a stand-in centre-half earlier in the season, and I suspect he might be a more reliable replacement for Bassong than Barnett or Bennett at this current time.

We could have signed a better center-half than Curtis for less than 1m, in the form of Anderlecht''s Roland Juhasz.  29, 6ft4, 76 caps, 210 games/20 goals for Anderlecht with whom he won several league titles, besides runs in the CL and EL. Seen him many times, great in the air, good positioning, can score when he goes forward like Bassong. Until the end of last season the Belgians thought him to be indispensable, and knocked back bids (2,5-3,5m) from Glasgow Rangers and Celtic, sometimes "moving the post" in the process. New manager wants to get rid, probably because of wage reasons (highest earner after 7 seasons). Btw. he always wanted a move to England. I''m not sure wether a loan would still be an option, but if it is, could be a great signing.

Where is this scouting system we have in place, if we have only Davies to go after for a c/b then I think it''s time to looking at what Chester and his team deliver.

I can understand that Davies may have been a little cheaper because of BIrminghams financial plight but again we seem to have no option B,C or or D.

£4m for an average Championship defender? No thanks. £2m and Barnett was a more than reasonable bid.

Signed for Birmingham having played in the prem with Aston Villa I believe!

He did get offers from Trabsonspor and a Ukranian club, but he turned these down. The Belgians claim that with 18 months on his contract he''s not really interested in a move, but I think otherwise. He needs first team football to retain his place in his national team, so he does want a move, but his preference would be probably England. (When Celtic/Rangers were after him, in an interview he quite explicitly said it wasn''t so much the wages that made him want the move, but the fact that he saw them as a gateway towards England. His current situation is a bit like Lappin''s under Roeder, he trains  with the youth team. The Belgians imho a treat their asset rather poorly because his current match fitness devalues the player. But that''s why I see him as potentially great value for money.
