Hardhouse44 261 Posted January 13, 2013 We need a more attacking line up against the teams we can beat at home. That line up yesterday is fine against the Man Utd''s and Arsenals of this world where we are looking to stay tight and nick a goal but when we need to dictate the play it''s not right. We should not play one up front at home against teams as poor and toothless as that Newcastle side. The manager is guilty of playing it too safe. We can''t play two holding midfielders in these game. Choose Johnson or Tetty not both.
Highland Canary 76 Posted January 13, 2013 Certainly Newcastle at home yesterday would have been a match that we might have tried to target as a win rather than one not to lose. And, yes, set the formation up in a more attacking manner for such games. Fulham on 9 February might be regarded as winnable or a month later Southampton. Gingerpele 0 Posted January 13, 2013 Shall we drop. Couple defenders and throw on some extra strikers? We are playing four attackinglayers, that''s pretty standerd...
SwindonCanary 455 Posted January 13, 2013 Hughton tends to stay with the same formation that he starts with whatever. Subs always replace a position, they never change to another formation.I would like him to do what WBA did against us, changed the formation to win the game. Clarke outmaneuvered Hughton that day, it''s time Hughton did it in a match.
Matt Morriss 69 Posted January 13, 2013 Johnson was the key player for me, in the sense that he didnt have an eventful game. The midfield battle wasnt a tough one and Tettey seemed to win it on his own.Johnson was largly a passenger as there just wasnt much to do, Tettey handled the midfield defensive work. We could and should have either played a 4.1.3.2 with just Tettey or Fox should have come on for Johnson.I didnt feel the game needed Johnsons robust all action midfield work, Tettey handled that, what it did need tho was Fox''s vision and playmaking as that onus was all on Wes who had a poor game. Joanna Grey 0 Posted January 13, 2013 Tettey was busier because he had to chase the balls he gave away with his poor passing. The weak link in our team is our inability (or choice) not to attack the opposition''s goal from a central position. It''s OK for Snoddy and Pilks to bring the ball in from the wings but Wes seems to have lost the ability to go forward, rather carrying or passing the ball across the width of the penalty box. Gingerpele 0 Posted January 13, 2013 Why is Johnson invisible to some people?I personally saw him doing just as much as Tettey in the defensive department, and his passing was better...
Beauseant 0 Posted January 13, 2013 That "too defensive" line up has garnered 26 points this season. Just saying...
Salopian 1 Posted January 13, 2013 It was too defensive, agreed, and it continued for much of the match. There is little point in playing two good wingers, perhaps not so good yesterday, and in the centre to deal with crosses perhaps the two shortest men in the squad - Wes and Jacko. Even Holt on his own is not going to score or provide chances if the only colleague near is Wes. If we want to play two wingers then the logic seems to suggest two strikers, with the implication that Wes sits out the occasional game, as we can''t afford to leave out either Tettey of Johno. I mwould like to see CH do one of two things, at least later in a game if not from the beginning.1) Play only one winger, probably Snoddy at the moment, and encourage Garrido and Johno to supply crosses from the left, OR2) Give Wes a rest for an occasional game, or part of a game, and play two wingers and two strikers. At home, and playing against a team who had lost so many games recently, the team selected was over-defensive. (I accept that Holt could not be risked for the whole game and we could not have offered two strikers, and we had lost four consecutive games.)
