What if...

Recommended Posts

We splashed out in January to get either of Theo Walcott or Daniel Sturridge, both of which have expiring contracts in the summer, to fix our striker problems

That should pretty much secure our premier league status shouldn''t it ?

But I''ll just continue to dream about signing players of such quality for the time being :)

:)

Ok, I''ll answer the question.   If we are in the business of dreaming about players we can''t afford, I wouldn''t particularly want Sturridge - who appears overrated and does not live up to the hype, imo.  Walcott would be a good signing, but not one I would dream about.

I will answer you seriously.
The problem with spending big money on one super signing is that it has the potential to disrupt the squad harmony and if he was to get injured it would seem like the biggest gamble and waste of money.

Dreams are great, and there is no reason we cant have players like him in years to come.

Where we are at the moment, he is to big a signing for us.

However, should we stay in the premiership, he would be the type of signing we will regulaly have in say three/four seasons time.

You really do need to BUILD a sqaud over seasons, now a season.

IIRC Sturridge = 75K per week = £3.9 million per year. 3 year contract = £11.7 Million + bonusesWalcott wants £90K per week = £4.68 million per year. 3 year contract = £14.04 million + bonusesIts not just the player value, its the wages. Our top earner (GH?) is on £25K per week.Combine that with the disharmony this would cause in the dressing room (as mentioned above) and you have a recipe for financial and footballing disaster.

I agree Indy, i was going to go on and say that we are going to have to start making signings soon where the players are on wages double some of the top earners are on now. Clubs like Fulham, Wigan and Sunderland have all tried to maintain a wage cap, but they also have 3 slots available in the squad for players above that (well they used to 2 season ago, it may have all changed now) - i can imagine this being a route we start to go down over the next two seasons.
Unfortuantly we could never get a Walcott, he is a top player and i think one of the best wingers in the league, there would be a better chance with Sturridge, but we still can''t come close to competing with the top 6 clubs on wages. Look at Sterling, reportedly being offered £30000 a week at Liverpool- that''s a 17 year old on higher wages than any of our players - crazy!!

Latest I''ve heard is we''re getting chamakh on loan with arsenal paying his wages, relatively reliable source.

Not sure I''d be happy with this as I don''t think he''ll put the effort in

Walcott and sturridge wouldn''t get in our team ;)
