Dave Watson

Recommended Posts

Mark Bunn is bought as immediate back-up to Ruddy, so to allow the potential loans of Rudd and Steer for regular first team football (I presume with the proviso of an immediate call-back, if needed).

So if our two young goalkeepers are going to spend the season at other clubs, exactly what benefit is there in having Dave Watson at the club? Surely having the England goalkeeping coach will be all but pointless if he can''t spend any time with the very two squad members that would learn the most?

Equally, what''s the point in having two young keepers sitting on the bench maybe playing the occasional game when they could be out getting consistent first-team football?

No doubt Dave Watson is a great coach, but there''s only so much you can learn from someone. As anyone who knows even a little about sport will agree, you learn the most from getting experience in competitive environments, not from training sessions regardless of how good the coaching is.

Not really sure what your point is - as a Prem club we should be getting the best coaching staff in, regardless of the age of our players. Actually, forget that, maybe we should just get rid of Dave Watson, and we can go down and take turns to coach the lads?

Good point. Perhaps we should loan him out too.

A specialist goalkeeping coach? How times have changed. I''ll bet the great ''Cat'' Keelan didn''t have his own coach and if anybody tried to tell him what to do, I''ll bet the old hot head would have been  red-carded from the training ground.

Give or take a few bits and pieces, I can''t really see the need for a full time goalkeeping coach, although the OP makes a valid point about the two youngsters.

They could always loan them alternately so we always have one of them at the club being coached.

Didn''t we do that a year or so ago with alternate 6 month loans?

Is Dave Watson full time at City?   Or is he a consultant type figure who comes in maybe twice a week  or some such to teach and supervise the golakeeper''s progress?      If  Rudd and Steer go out on loan would he follow them around and supervise them when on loan?    We don''t really know (or I don''t anyway) what his job description is.

Joking apart, I would hope that it''s in an advisory capacity, there can be no other justification for his connection with Carrow Road, IMO.

He is undoubtedly very good, but there has to be a limit for this role.

Not really sure what my point is?

That says more about you than it does about me......

Well perhaps you could clarify it for me, or alternatively answer any of the points I made in my post rather than getting precious about it?

Dave Watson is a very good goalkeeping coach, and I think this is the sort of person we should strive to get and keep on our coaching staff. Ruddy is still extremely young in keeping terms, so I''m sure is still learning.

If Rudd and Steer both go off to get first-team experience on loan, then I am sure our goalkeeping coach will stay in touch with them. Are you basically suggesting we should downgrade our goalkeeper coach because they wouldn''t be directly coached by him at this time?

Dave Watson is undoubtedly a fine coach as you don''t get into the England setup as a coach without having some serious qualities. If Rudd and Steer had potential to be pushing for regular starts within 12 months don''t you think a coach of Watson''s calibre would have told the club not to ship them out on loan (which looks a likely outcome). Watson knows what he is doing, and I am sure he would have recommended some time away to get regular games is more important than being coached at this moment in time.

Look back at Scezsney when he went out on loan in 2009, he got his regular games, grew as a goalkeeper and has nailed himself a regular spot at Arsenal as a result. I hope our young keepers can get the same experience and come back equally as strong.

The point of having Watson is that he''s there to get the best out of our first choice and backup keeper, whilst helping develop the young lads. Both might go out on loan, but if only one does, that''s another player for Watson to help improve and chances are he''ll have some input regarding their development even when they''re on loan.Just like you want the best manager at the club, you also want the best coaches who help get the best out of every player, hence why Watson was brought in to deal with the keepers - even if it''s only 2 of them!

We''re missing an obvious point here, is the OP implying we shouldn''t have sent Rudd and Steer out on loan as we have Dave Watson at the club?

Surely Big Dave will be working with Ruddy on a daily basis, and as an England keeper ideally needs an England Coach at the club?

The point is a bit confusing? We''re expected to downgrade our coaching staff because we''ve sent players out on loan?

I think it''s a great fillup for the club having the England goalkeeping coach.

We have two exceptionally promising young goalkeepers at the club who will not benefit from this if they are both sent out on loan. I presume they will only go on loan on the promise of first team football, and it would be very strange if the clubs that took them would allow them regular return visits to Carrow Road.

Experience is obviously vital, but the opportunity to work with a highly regarded coach will potentialy be missed.

Perhaps the title of the post wasn''t ideal, but the sentiments of the post remain the same.
