smooth 114 Posted July 12, 2012 So was it the metro putting into print that Reading are interested in putting a £5million bid for De Foe.He is a striker I very much admire and have for a number of years for his selfish, greedy approach. He gets the ball and drives to the goal, with pace and power for a small man. Takes shots from outside of the area and for me is a genuine threat who hasn''t played a great deal so in fact is a little fresher.Certainly these attributes are what I feel we would like to see in our first 11, De Foe is a team player but when he has a little look at goal, he takes it. I do not think we would be able to look at a player of his calibre for 2-3 more years in the premiership but if we can look for a pacey, direct forward with the ability to strike for distance would be exactly what we need. Yellowbeagle 0 Posted July 12, 2012 If the russian guy at Reading is on 65k a week then Defoe will be on at least that. As good as he can be, he doesnt score nearly enough goals imo for a player who shoots at even a glimpse of the goal, regardless of where team mates are placed. jed exodous 0 Posted July 12, 2012 You must really admire him to be able to cock up the spelling of his name? For what its worth, in my opinion, Defoe is past his best. He was a decent striker, but the rotation has cost him. For what would be our biggest ever fee paid, and a massive contract by our standards, I wouldn''t go for it. I do agree we need a smaller pacey striker, someone with a little bit more quality than Jackson, but I don''t think JD is it... I also think, if we were to go down, he wouldn''t be able to get out quick enough. I doubt sleepy Norfolk would meet his expectations on the social side of things either... smooth 114 Posted July 12, 2012 There we go. spelling corrected.Yeah thought it looked wrong when I wrote it.Would not expect him to come here, as my post highlighted but a player with the same ethos would be ideal.Just wished when I came on here there was hype about the summer dealings. Yes it is early but getting guys in and used to the area, the team, the club culture, fitness levels and our playing style. It will all happen but the sooner the better. AndyCanary 0 Posted July 12, 2012 As much as I''d like his ability here he''s not the kind of player we''ll sign at the moment. Firstly his wages would blow apart the clubs wage structure and would cause all sorts of fall out through the team even if we could afford him.Secondly we have a young team full of up and coming talent. There are no big names and I like it that way.

dpit 1 Posted July 13, 2012 If Defoe does not come it will prove that prudence is defoe of ambition and that is for sure - defoe. And if you don''t believe it, wake up and hear the coffee...defoe..

Indy_Bones 444 Posted July 13, 2012 I really do begin to wonder what some fans actually want.If you want to improve on the current quality of our squad then you have to pay for it, be this in wages, transfer fees or both.If there was a plethora of super talented, hungry young players available for a pittance, then we wouldn''t be seeing transfers like Hazard to Chelsea etc, as they''d simply pay a tenth of that to sign some relative unknown who could do the same job.Fans say they want us to sign players who can challenge our existing first team for a place, the fact is that we aren''t going to get players who can do that on the cheap. The idea that a player with the ability of Defoe is either past it, too expensive or we''re too rural for him is laughable. You cannot have your cake and eat it these days, so either we need to shut up about demanding top quality signings, or we start paying the going rate for that quality of player and accept that''s the marketplace we''re in at the minute. In my view a player like Defoe would be a massive signing and would be the perfect foil to someone like Holt in our front line, and surely that''s what we want isn''t it???
