Even the worst case scenario is not too bad

Recommended Posts

I''m not saying its going to happen but let''s just say our worst fears are realised and Lambert walks in the close season, leading to a slump next year and relegation. We would then have two years Premiership income under our belt plus parachute payments, enough to allow us to have enough readies to buy the players necessary for us to go straight back up. Survival this season has been of absolutely enormous significance in terms of our long term future - two seasons in the Premiership plus prudent financial planning in the last few years means that at worst we will be a yo-yo club for a few seasons before establishing ourselves in the Premiership. Had we gone down this year - the finances available to us may well have not been enough to allow for us to bounce straight back.

Enormous achievement - well done to all.

Yeah, I definately see what your saying Dpit, however when I look at wolves, the only premiership club without debt, 3 years continuous in the premiership, I dont think it will be that easy for them next year to come straight back up, maybe wrong

If Lambo does exit, but unlikely, then Culverhouse would be my choice as manager. Of course all managers eventually leave, pastures new, the sack, retirement whatever but I feel that there is less liklihood of PL leaving us just yet as there is of Wenger leaving the Arse. What reason would he have? There are not many Prem. sides who could offer him more atm, and certainly not Villa or WBA. There are banana skins awaiting out there, ask Mike Walker.

Ian Culverhouse would, IMO, be the perfect transition should we be confronted with the worst case scenario. Lambo is not the sole single reason for our Phoenix like rise from the ashes. Ian C. must be pretty good, cheffy and co. haven''t put a foot wrong since sacking Gunny, McNally and Bowkett. are a pretty sharp duo and we have Grant as well as a few other gems. So many positives came together at one time that the loss of one element, however devasting will not dismantle the edifice that has been built in the last three seasons. The massive support has to be added to this list of plusses.

Please stay put for some time yet Paul, but if you do get lured away then it won''t be a John Deehan (who I loved to bits) repeat story at the Carra. IMO.
Losing Gunny to a broken Leg is what did for us back then... Deehan had us playing good football and looking like we were heading for Europe right up until christmas....2 games in 24 hours (unheard of now) led to Gunny breaking his ankle...Andy Marshall did his best but was just 18 years old, the defence had gone from having an experienced old head behind them to a mere baby, Raw but eager,.... the mistakes started to creep in, the defenders started to not listen to the young keeper and the decline started with Marshalls inexperience showing....By the time Deehan acted it was for Simon Tracey who was coming back from a severe head injury and shoulder problems and might well have been a good goalkeeper before but was terrible afterwards....Sitting in the reserves at Man City was Andy Marriott, Welsh number 1 and not getting a game ahead of Tony Cotton and Budge Burridge... at 28 Marriot might have been the man to have kept us up.... Chase would have stayed... things could have been far different...how we will never know....
The problem with that is that Lambert may well take Culverhouse with him, as he did when they came to us and when they left Wycombe. Of course, Culverhouse may decide he wants a shot at management. Who knows? Would the one be as effective without the other?

Yes Jas all you state is true and my memory is now refreshed. The question has to be asked though is why there was such a delay in getting an experienced ''keeper and when the rot set in, then why was something not done about it sooner? We were a decent side then, but JD didn''t really stand a chance as Chase''s obssession with frugality and selling had gone too far too soon. Our fall was drastic to the extreme.

I am not blaming John Deehan in the slightest but simply want to make the point that the hierarchical infrastructure at the Club is far sounder now than then and therefore can withstand the loss of Lambo without such a disatrous outcome.

Ian Culverhouse might well follow a departing Lambert, but the lure of managing us would be strong.

This is all hyperthetical and a bit pessimistic so let''s hope nothing drastic happens for at least the next two seasons.Lambo is our prized asset, let''s also hope that Delia and Co. continue to treat him as such. We would still be a strong set-up if he should be tempted way and in this I am optimistic. We are not now a one-man band.
