Blatter penalty alternative....

Recommended Posts

Sepp Blatter has called for a change to the penalty shoot out - what do you think a viable alternative could be?

I was going to suggest it goes to stats, ie whoever has the highest number of shots on target, then shots etc..... as it would encourage teams to push forward more, take more shots and, if they get lucky, avoid the need for pens altogether - however, this wouldn''t work at grass roots level...

So, any further suggestions of a solution which can be implemented at all levels of the game?

How about removing continue playing after the 30 mins extra time, but remove a player from each team every 2 mins until one team scores. Will create space and force teams to go looking for the winner.

Wouldnt happen but would be fun to watch.

I love penalties...people say they arent "Fair" but both teams get 5 each.... if a player cant kick a stationary ball 12 yards then he seriously needs to have a look at himself.

Its got to be Golden Goal

It encourages attcking play, and yes the pen shoot out is exiting, but the 30 minutes extra time before that is ALWAYS boring as players just go through the motions to the pens.
thats why they took golden goal away.. because it led to teams just shutting up shop for fear of making a mistake and losing a game....id be interested to see a figure on how much difference the rule actually made.

I don''t think that''s always true. Bayern Munich kept on attacking in the Champions League final.

As for getting rid of penalties because Blatter says they aren''t fair. Why aren''t they fair?

At the end of the day someone has to win and someone has to lose. Penalties bring a lot of drama, and I much prefer them to a golden goal...

During indoor footy seasons, we do the same thing when it gets to the tournament. keep in mind this is on a 100 yard turf field and not a full sized pitch lol.

This This This.

I would start it after normal time and every 5 minutes. It tests the managers tactics, the players fitness and ability and retains the edge of seat excitement for the fans. Easy to implement at grass roots. It also reduces the hero/villain aspect of penalties. If Blatter was to implement this I think I could actually forgive him for presiding over a corupt/joke of an organisation.

I wont hold my breath however, remember this is the man who thinks the way to promoted womens football is to make them wear tighter shorts.

Have the penalty shootout BEFORE the game kicks off. Some Pros:Extra 20 mins prime tv coverage per game to sell.More entertainment for the fans.Players who miss will not feel quite so responsible for the teams elimination. Will encourage more attacking play especially in extra time as one team will know that ultimately they will have to score.**

Con** Might encourage more defensive play as the other team will know a draw is enough but tbh this can happen anyway but you couldn''t always plan your tactics to defend for 120mins if the lottery of a pen shootout preceded the game.Select a squad to "park the bus" and you could be in trouble if you then lose the shootout.

It''s taken Blatter long enough to come up with this gem. What''s new all of a sudden?

The penalties have stood the test of time because there are no begtter alternatives apart from a replay. That''s not usually feasable though.

The ''Golden Goal'' was truly awful,it seemed a bit of an American-stlye approach to me for some reason and was not "proper" football as I know it.

Penalties are fun, fair and conclusive.

Probably because an English club won the CL on penalties. After all they appear to have been fair up to then...

Its a horrible way to lose. But why do want to get rid of something which encompasses so much tension and drama. Its pure theatre. The alternatives are pretty rubbish. Gradually withdrawing players would also ruin the "essence" of the game as Blatter puts it. Golden goal just becomes tedious and like watching paint dry as teams become increasing tidy/risk asserve as a result. Replays are not logisitically possible for a lot of big events like a play off final. Knowing Blatter he will decide to settle the game using FA doubles, headers and volleys, crossbar challenge or subbuteo.

I quite liked ''Golden Goal'', especially the ''Golden Own Goal'' scored in the UEFA Cup final a decade ago... nothing like being solely responsible for the loss ;)

The best alternative I''ve heard for penalties was an idea my barber thought up... The match ends as a draw - penalties are then done first in the classic way - the winner of the shoot-out gets a ''half goal'' - the teams then plays the 30 mins of extra time knowing that it can''t end in a draw and with the other team (who lost the shoot out) needing to score. Thus a game will actually end playing football and not penalties. I thought it was a great idea.
To be fair to Sepp Blatter (and that is not something you will hear from me very often) it is not the first time an English club has won the CL on penalties.

1.Why dont they make the goal bigger in extra time

or

2. Take the goalkeeper out of each team in extra time (like ice hockey pulling the goaltender)

Either of these would greatly increase the chance of one side beating the other.

The Germans just can''t stand losing to the English and if Bayern had won, nothing would have been said. Keep penalty shoot-outs as fortune now seems to be turning in our favour !!  [:D]

Golden goal is akin to the old school call of ''next goal winner'', which invariably meant the team who''d been crap all dinner getting the winner through a bit of luck...Obviously GG isn''t quite that bad, but it''s not a million miles away from it.I honestly don''t see the problem with penalties, as if one of the teams had done enough during the previous 120 minutes to win the game - they wouldn''t be having to worry about pens...

Something I''ve seen done on numerous occasions in Italy during the pre-season mini tournaments are the 7-second shoot-outs.

For anyone that hasn''t heard of them before, it works similar to penalties. Each team has 5 each, then sudden death if level after the first 10 have been taken. Each player has to start with the ball from the half way line and has 7 secs to score a goal in whatever way they can. Keepers are allowed to come out of their goals and it''s not as easy as you might think for the player to score as the 7 sec limit adds a lot of pressure and urgency.

Absolutely brilliant and entertaining to watch, although I suppose in essence there isn''t too much difference to the way penalties work. One thing I guess it might do is to make managers think twice before withdrawing their attacking/creative players in favour of defensive tactics, as they are the players you''d expect more likely to excel in this type of scenario.

Could alter the rules in extra time so that a ball that goes out over the touchline is either a goal kick or a corner depending on which half of the pitch it goes out in rather than a throw in. This would create more goal mouth action.

I had an idea about this while watching the Champions League final. Often, extra time can be quite tedious as nobody wants to risk losing it at that stage. So most of the time, they play for penalties. So what if one team did have to go for it in that period? My suggestion is that if its still even at the end of extra time, the match goes to the team who last led the match. I think this is fair as taking the lead is generally tougher than equalising. I say that because both teams are generally more cagey when the scores are level, just like they are in extra time. So this is a reward for successful attacking play. In extra time, one side knows they will lose if they do not go all out for a goal so they will throw everything at it in extra time and provide an entertaining spectacle.

I have a source at FIFA who told me they are currently considering the following possiblities

1. After normal time an additional 30 minutes is played but with the introduction of a second football. The additional time will be renamed from ''extra-time'' to ''multi-ball''. It will appeal to the american audiance who prefer faster paced sports.

2. After normal time, extra time is played with ''golden goal'' rules, however the players will have their boots replaced with flippers. The additional comedy element will attract more younger fans to the game

3. After normal time players will have to remove one item of clothing every 5 minutes. all games will be played after a 10pm watershed

4. After extra time the game will be decided by the managers playing a best of three game of the classic waddington childrens favorate Guess Who.

5. After normal time the wifes & girlfriends of players are sent to a hotel room with John Terry. The first player to break rank and leave the field losses the game for his team.

It is understood by my source that there is no prefered option currently but all options are fully on the table.
