Norwich city had just finished the season outside a relegation place in the old Division 1....18 goal Striker, 30 year old ,Robert Fleck handed in a transfer request... citing more money, bigger and better things...The fans were in uproar, the club darling and top scorer had been sold for 2 million pounds....he was greedy, he was selfish, the club had no ambition, relegation would soon follow...Mike Walker then dipped into the fleck fund to sign a nobody... at 300,000 a manchester united reserve was signed... 21 year old Mark Robbins... who is this no name? thought the fans... He wont get us anywhere, hes a raw reserve team player!15 goals later and the club had just qualified for Europe after its most succesful season.....Grant Holt is our fleck....We need to find our Robins....Europe here we come....?

nice post. been thinking for a while now that 20 years on we are destined for european qualification again.

at least 3rd place this time will guarantee CL qualification, rather than an anxious wait for a uefa place when someone wins both cups!

I will be disappointed if he leaves, he is a big part of what has got this club off its arse. Best of luck Holty you have served us well.

Football may be a business and a job for players, but there is no profit in fans trooping all over the country to watch you, we do it because we love the club, we love the game.

Nice analogy, Jas, even if you have over-egged the pudding a bit! Robins was actually already quite a name. Had scored 11 first-team goals in 48 appearances. Saved Ferguson''s job with one of them, so the story goes. And Wiki puts the fee at £800,000, which is right, I think. What one might add is that Fleck (the Holt figure) was an absolute flop at Chelsea. But probably a very well-paid flop.

It was £800,000.

And the expensive flop came back. Windass didn''t join him though[6]

Indeed, nutty. Of course if one wanted to be pessimistic, instead of using the Fleck/Robins analogy[Y] one could use the Sutton/Sheron analogy...[:@][U][8o|]

That''s the best mindset to have, out of every negative comes a positive, just looking forward to PL bringing in a new hero for us to adore and f*#king love :)

We are still in the Prem, Lambert will still be in charge, turned out nice again.

A few years ago I asked Albert Bennett about Bryan Conlon. My memories of him weren''t great. Albert spoke really well of him though. He loved playing with him. Said he was a good player and a good bloke.

I seem to remember he left under a cloud and we swapped him for Malcolm Darling.

Over to you Purple...........

Was he really 30 when he left the club for Chelsea? Blimey, thought he was much younger than that.

The thing with Darren Beckford is that: 1 - He cost FAR too much 2 - He had failure written all over him before he even joined us! He had hardly set any football pitches on fire. But yes, 1991 was a good year for Norwich City IIRC.They were still making chocolate at Rowntree Mackintosh in Norwich too !

Twenty odd years ago you finished third behind Man United and The Villa. It was another twenty years until you had a decent fknish in the top flight.

Beyond all the gnashing of teeth, that is why Lambert is leaving.
