Everton's FA Cup desire

Recommended Posts

Everton have been in the top flight for decades.  Their current finances and resources mean they''ll not break into the top six for a long time, probably at least until a new buyer comes in.  They also know that in all likelihood, they''ve enough quality not to get dragged into any relegation battles.  So for the time being, their only chance of silverware is the FA Cup.  The club, management, players, and supporters get it.  Which is why they took 7000 to Sunderland tonight, and showed immense desire to progress. We all want NCFC to continue to rise up the PL hierarchy, but in all reality, mid table is (hopefully) the likely outcome for the next few years at least.  Maybe, just maybe, the penny will drop at some point with our management/players, and we''ll adopt Everton''s approach and mentality.  Might not be next season, might be the one after.  After all, Stoke made the final recently, so there''s hope for us yet.

Completely agree with the OP

As you have pointed out though, we need a steady 3 years before we start thinking of heading down that route ala Stoke and Everton.

Winning the Cup is practically like winning the league in terms of sense of achievement for any club outside the top 5 or 6 without an oil baron at the heir.

Just to be pedantic - aren''t Everton one of the only teams (along with Arsenal) who have never been out of the top flight?

Quite right L,H, but a lot of people on here also have the idea we should be playing Benfica every week, instead of learning to walk first, We are more or less safe and will be here next season, I am fully prepared to let PL do his job and build the squad to establish us as a premier club,  Some will see that as non ambitious call it what you want I on the other hand don''t want a repeat of championship football or lower.

How much longer are we going to discuss the Leicester game? It was a poor performance and a disappointing outcome. But it was interesting that there were not any posters on here a couple of weeks ago saying that they wished it was us going to Chelsea in the 6th round. Because that was what beating Leicester meant. A very difficult, challenging and exhausting trip to Chelsea where last time we went, our keeper picked up a three match suspension. It would also mean a midweek trip to Newcastle.

The OP is right that in time, the Cup will be a realistic aim. If he truly thinks that the penny on that has still to drop then he is even more patronising of the management of the Club than City 1st is accused of being to him.

But City 1st is right. We are not Everton nor even Stoke. In some ways the worse thing for the Club this season would have been to beat Leicester. If anyone doubts that, just ask yourself this question.

Are you, like me, pleased that we are playing Everton next week just before their semifinal when they will hopefully have other things on their minds and be an easier proposiiton for us?

I always think it''s slightly naive to say that had we been in the hat for the 6th round then we''d have definitely got Chelsea (this applies to any other draw where we''ve been knocked out).  In some way or other the balls may have come out differently.  Just before the draw was made, we all wished we were still in, with a kind draw giving us a good chance of reaching Wembley.  Only a hindsight merchant would say they were glad we went out AFTER the draw.To conclude, all I''m saying is I hope we adopt Everton''s and Stoke''s approach in the next few years if we''re still in the PL and more established.

The Leicester cup match still disappoints, simply because it was a game we could and should have won and, I believe, instilled in the players the wrong attitude.Call me old-fashioned, but I was always of the opinion that you go out to play and beat every team that you come up against, regardless of whether it is a league or cup match. The attitude at Norwich seems to have developed over many years that, tactically, cup matches are a distraction and can safely be ignored.......may be correct in some cases, but ultimately hugely frustrating for the fans.If we had drawn Chelsea, so what? They are vulnerable, not the force they were and we could have been anticipating a day out at Wembley. Cue the pessimists who will respond by claiming our Premiership occupancy would thus be jeopardised.Newcastle away mid-week...we lost anyway, Everton before the semi-finals...both teams would be in the same boat.
